OpenWiki
LangChain command-line tool that generates and updates a linked Markdown wiki of your repository for coding agents and developers.
What is OpenWiki?
OpenWiki is an open-source command-line tool from LangChain that reads a repository and writes a linked Markdown wiki into an openwiki folder you control. Coding agents such as Claude Code, Codex, OpenCode, Cursor and GitHub Copilot CLI can search and read those pages through MCP tools, so they find context without crawling raw files. People can open the same pages or explore them as an interactive node graph with the visualize command. Each wiki page records the source evidence behind its claims, so later updates concentrate on code that changed, and interrupted runs resume page by page. You can start from inside your coding agent, which uses its own model session, or run the standalone CLI with one of fourteen model providers, a personal-knowledge mode and scheduled CI updates. The workspace feature links several repositories so one search covers all their wikis. OpenWiki itself is free to install from npm; the only cost is whatever your model provider charges for the generation run.
Use cases
- Generate a documentation wiki for a repository
- Give coding agents searchable repo context
- Search across several related repositories
- Refresh docs automatically from CI on a schedule
- Explore a codebase as an interactive graph
- Build a personal knowledge wiki from sources
Who it's for
Why use OpenWiki
- Agents answer questions from a maintained wiki, which saves them from re-reading the whole repository for every task.
- Updates target changed code and stale claims, so documentation keeps up without a full rewrite each time.
- The wiki is plain Markdown stored in your repo, so you own it and can review it in a normal pull request.
- Linked workspaces let one search span a control plane, data plane and infrastructure repo together.
- No separate model setup is needed when you run it inside a coding agent you already use.
OpenWiki features
- Linked Markdown wiki written to an openwiki folder in the repo
- Source-evidence Claims that flag facts needing an update
- Install commands for Codex, Claude Code, OpenCode, Cursor, Kiro and more
- MCP search and read tools for agents
- openwiki link workspaces for cross-repository search
- openwiki visualize graph with a side-by-side Markdown reader
- Parallel page workers set by OPENWIKI_PAGE_CONCURRENCY (1 to 8)
- Resumable runs that save progress after each page
- Example CI jobs for GitHub Actions, GitLab CI and Bitbucket Pipelines
- Support for fourteen model providers in the standalone CLI
- Maintains AGENTS.md at the repo root on code runs
OpenWiki integrations
How to get started with OpenWiki
- Install the package with npm install -g openwiki (Node.js 22.22.0 or newer is required).
- Connect your coding agent with an openwiki integrations install command, or run openwiki --init to choose a model provider.
- Ask the agent to initialize the wiki; it plans the pages and writes each one into the openwiki folder with source evidence.
- Search and read the pages through MCP, link related repositories with openwiki link, or open the graph with openwiki visualize.
- After code changes, run an update, or add one of the example CI jobs so a docs pull request opens on a schedule.
OpenWiki limitations
- Needs Node.js 22.22.0 or newer
- Coding-agent integrations support repository code wikis, not personal brains
- Connector-sourced context such as LangSmith is not yet supported in host-driven runs
- The graph viewer loads libraries from a public CDN, so it needs an internet connection
OpenWiki pricing
OpenWiki is open source, so you can use and self-host it for free.

OpenWiki FAQ
Is OpenWiki free to use?
The package is free to install with npm and the source is on GitHub. Generating pages calls an AI model, so you pay your model provider for that usage unless you run it inside an agent session you already have.
Which coding agents does OpenWiki work with?
Install commands exist for Codex, Claude Code, OpenCode, Cursor, IBM Bob, Kiro, Oh My Pi, Antigravity and GitHub Copilot CLI. Pi installs separately through the pi install command.
Does OpenWiki have an API or MCP support?
Agents reach the wiki through MCP tools such as openwiki_search and openwiki_read, which are local, read-only and make no model calls of their own. There is also a lifecycle of MCP tools for generating the wiki.
How do I keep an OpenWiki wiki up to date?
Ask your agent to update it, or run openwiki --update. It checks repository changes and stale claims, and clean updates skip model work. Example workflows for GitHub Actions, GitLab CI and Bitbucket Pipelines open a docs PR on a schedule.
Can OpenWiki search across several repositories?
Yes. The openwiki link command groups existing wikis into named workspaces, and search then covers every member wiki, with results naming the wiki they came from.
What are alternatives to OpenWiki?
Similar tools generate or host codebase documentation for AI assistants, such as DeepWiki, Mintlify, Swimm and Repomix. They differ in whether the output is a local Markdown folder you own.
