OpenClaw Ansible

Ansible playbook that installs OpenClaw on Debian or Ubuntu servers with a firewall, Tailscale VPN, Docker and automatic updates

Open source

What is OpenClaw Ansible?

OpenClaw Ansible is an open-source installer that deploys OpenClaw onto a Debian or Ubuntu server with security hardening already applied. One playbook run sets up Tailscale for private remote access, a UFW firewall that leaves only SSH and Tailscale ports open, Fail2ban for SSH brute-force protection, Docker CE with Compose for sandboxes, Node.js 22.x with pnpm, and OpenClaw itself on the host. It can be run through a one-line install script, a cloned repository, or as the openclaw.installer Ansible collection against an inventory of several servers. Two modes are offered: release mode installs the latest npm package, while development mode clones the repository and builds from source. After the playbook finishes, you switch to the openclaw user and run the onboarding wizard to connect a messaging provider and install the gateway daemon. The project is free under the MIT license, so there is no pricing or paid plan to compare. Bare-metal macOS support was removed in February 2026, and the playbook now stops if it detects macOS.

Use cases

  • Install OpenClaw on a fresh Ubuntu server
  • Harden a self-hosted agent gateway host
  • Provision several OpenClaw servers from one inventory
  • Build OpenClaw from source for development
  • Reach an agent server privately over Tailscale

Who it's for

  • Self-hosters
  • DevOps engineers
  • OpenClaw developers
  • Sysadmins

Why use OpenClaw Ansible

  • Replaces a long manual hardening checklist with a single repeatable playbook run.
  • Keeps the server reachable only over SSH and Tailscale, so the agent gateway is not exposed to the public internet.
  • Lets you pick stable npm releases for production or a source build for testing changes.
  • Works as an Ansible collection, so the same role can be reused across many hosts and existing playbooks.
  • Free and MIT licensed, with a documented dry-run option for auditing before you apply it.

OpenClaw Ansible features

  • UFW firewall exposing only SSH and Tailscale ports
  • Fail2ban bans after 5 failed SSH attempts for 1 hour
  • Tailscale mesh VPN with optional auth-key auto-connect
  • Docker CE and Compose V2 for sandboxes
  • Docker isolation so containers cannot publish ports externally
  • Unattended-upgrades for automatic security patches
  • Release mode via pnpm and development mode built from source
  • Packaged as an Ansible collection for multi-server inventories
  • OpenClaw runs as an unprivileged user with scoped sudo
  • Post-install security verification checklist

OpenClaw Ansible integrations

  • Tailscale
  • Docker
  • Ansible
  • WhatsApp
  • Telegram
  • Signal
  • pnpm
  • Node.js

How to get started with OpenClaw Ansible

  1. Run the install script, or clone the repository and start ./run-playbook.sh on a Debian or Ubuntu target.
  2. The playbook installs Tailscale, UFW, Fail2ban, Docker, Node.js and pnpm, then installs OpenClaw on the host.
  3. Optionally set variables such as SSH keys, install mode or a Tailscale auth key on the command line or in a vars file.
  4. Switch to the openclaw user and run the onboarding command to configure a messaging provider and the daemon.
  5. Run the post-install security checks to confirm the firewall, SSH protection and localhost-only listening.

OpenClaw Ansible limitations

  • Bare-metal macOS is no longer supported and the playbook fails on it
  • Targets need Debian 11+ or Ubuntu 20.04+ with root or sudo access
  • The Ansible controller needs ansible-core 2.14 or newer

OpenClaw Ansible FAQ

How much does OpenClaw Ansible cost?

Nothing. The project is open source under the MIT license and no paid plans are listed on its repository page.

Is there a free plan for OpenClaw Ansible?

There are no tiers at all. The whole installer is free to use, though you supply and pay for your own server.

Does OpenClaw Ansible work on macOS?

No. Since 2026-02-06 the playbook refuses to run on bare-metal macOS because of the security risks of the system permissions OpenClaw needs. A Vagrant or Docker based approach is being evaluated.

Which operating systems does OpenClaw Ansible support?

Target servers must run Debian 11 or newer, or Ubuntu 20.04 or newer, and the controller needs ansible-core 2.14 or newer.

Is OpenClaw Ansible open source?

Yes. It is published on GitHub under the MIT license, and installer bugs are tracked in its own issue tracker.

Can I install OpenClaw from source with it?

Yes. Set openclaw_install_mode to development and the playbook clones the OpenClaw repository, runs pnpm install and pnpm build, and links the binary into ~/.local/bin.
