OpenClaw

Open-source personal AI assistant that runs on your own devices and takes actions for you through WhatsApp, Telegram, Slack, Discord and other chat apps.

Open source

What is OpenClaw?

OpenClaw is an open-source AI assistant that you run on your own machine or server and talk to through the chat apps you already use. A single Gateway connects channels such as Telegram, WhatsApp, Discord, Slack, iMessage, Signal and WebChat, with many more added as official plugins, and the agent can organize an inbox, send email, manage a calendar or check you in for a flight. It supports multi-agent routing with isolated sessions, browser automation, sandboxed command execution, web search, cron jobs and heartbeat scheduling, skills and plugins, and media in and out, including voice notes and text-to-speech. You choose the model: Anthropic, OpenAI, Google and others, or self-hosted endpoints such as Ollama, vLLM and LM Studio. Desktop apps for macOS, Windows and Linux install the gateway for you, and iOS and Android nodes add pairing, camera, voice and device commands. The site says there is no subscription, no hosted tier and no token, and the project is stewarded by an independent nonprofit. You pay only the model providers you use.

How to get started with OpenClaw

  1. Install a desktop app or run the one-line installer, which sets up Node.js and the gateway.
  2. Add a model provider with an API key, OAuth subscription auth or a self-hosted endpoint.
  3. Connect channels such as Telegram or WhatsApp, installing official plugins for others.
  4. Message the assistant and approve unknown senders with DM pairing.
  5. Add skills, schedules and browser automation, and pair mobile nodes if you want device access.

OpenClaw limitations

  • Only A2A, Reef, Telegram and WebChat ship in the core install; other channels are plugins
  • You supply and pay for the model providers you use
  • Some channels such as WeChat are maintained outside the OpenClaw repository
  • Unknown senders must be approved through DM pairing before they get replies
  • You run and maintain the gateway yourself, or use a third-party host
