What is Claude Code?

Claude Code is Anthropic's coding agent. You give it a job such as fixing a bug, writing tests or carrying out a migration that takes days, and it works through the project while you steer and review. It runs in a terminal, in VS Code and JetBrains extensions, in a desktop app for macOS, Linux and Windows, on the web, on iOS and Android, from GitHub and from Slack. The documentation lists subagents, hooks, commands, skills, CLAUDE.md memory, plugins, MCP servers, checkpoints and sandboxing as capabilities that work on every provider. You can sign in with a Claude subscription (Pro, Max, Team or Enterprise), use an Anthropic Console account, or reach Claude models through Amazon Bedrock, Google Cloud's Agent Platform or Microsoft Foundry, although cloud sessions, the desktop app and a few other features need a subscription. Console usage is billed by API tokens, and the cost guide puts average enterprise spend near $13 per developer per active day.

Use cases

  • Fix bugs found in a codebase
  • Write tests for existing modules
  • Run multi-day code migrations
  • Explain what an unfamiliar repo does
  • Debug flaky CI test runs
  • Schedule recurring dependency audits

Who it's for

  • Software developers
  • Engineering teams
  • Enterprise IT admins

Why use Claude Code

  • Hand off a bug fix, test suite or long migration and review the result, instead of typing every edit yourself.
  • Start from the terminal, an IDE, the web, GitHub or Slack, so the agent fits the place your team already works.
  • Hooks, subagents, skills and MCP servers let you shape how the agent behaves in your own repositories.
  • Several billing paths (subscription, Console API key, or a cloud provider such as Bedrock) suit different company setups.
  • Built-in usage tracking and team spend limits help you see what a pilot actually costs.
