Repomix
Open-source tool that packs a whole code repository into one AI-friendly file with token counts and secret checks.
What is Repomix?
Repomix packages an entire codebase into a single file that you can hand to a language model such as ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini or Grok. You run it with npx repomix@latest in a project folder and it writes repomix-output.xml, or you can pick Markdown, JSON or plain text output. It respects .gitignore files, counts tokens for each file and for the whole repository so you can stay inside context limits, and uses Secretlint to leave out files that look like credentials. A compress option uses Tree-sitter to keep code signatures and structure while dropping implementation detail, which the docs say cuts tokens by about 70%. Besides the command line, there is a web interface, a Chrome extension, a Docker image, an MCP server, a GitHub Action and a Node.js library. Teams use the output for code review, refactoring, bug investigation and documentation. It is MIT-licensed and free to use.
Use cases
- Pack a repo for ChatGPT or Claude
- Review code with full project context
- Plan a refactor with an AI assistant
- Investigate bugs across many files
- Generate documentation for a codebase
- Package docs and books as LLM knowledge files
Who it's for
Why use Repomix
- The AI sees the full repository at once, so you do not have to hand over files one by one.
- Token counts help you decide what fits in a model's context limit before you paste.
- Compression and ignore rules reduce token use without extra manual cleanup.
- It works with any chat subscription you already have, so no extra API cost is needed.
Repomix features
- Output in XML, Markdown, JSON or plain text
- Respects .gitignore and .git/info/exclude
- Token counts per file and for the whole repository
- Secretlint check that excludes files with likely credentials
- Tree-sitter code compression for fewer tokens
- Options to remove comments and show line numbers
- Works on local and remote repositories with --remote
- Configuration through repomix.config files
- MCP server, GitHub Actions and Node.js library
Repomix integrations
How to get started with Repomix
- Run npx repomix@latest in your project directory, or install it with npm, yarn, bun or Homebrew.
- Repomix reads the files, honors .gitignore and skips files that look like secrets.
- It writes repomix-output.xml, or the format you chose with --style.
- Upload the file to an AI assistant with a prompt describing the task, such as a refactor or code review.
- Add a repomix.config.json to keep your ignore patterns and output options.
Repomix limitations
- A large repository can exceed an AI model's context window even after packing
- Secret detection only leaves out files matching known credential formats
- Escaping the output increases the token count
Repomix pricing
Repomix is open source, so you can use and self-host it for free.
