claude-mem

Open-source memory engine that saves what your coding agent does, summarizes it and brings it back in later sessions.

What is claude-mem?

claude-mem gives AI coding agents memory that lasts beyond a single session. Hooks record tool usage and prompts while you work, a background worker turns them into structured observations and summaries, and the next session starts with relevant context from earlier ones already loaded. Data lives in a local SQLite database with full-text search, with an optional Chroma vector index for semantic search, and a web viewer shows the memory stream. It installs with npx claude-mem install or from the Claude Code plugin marketplace, and works with Cursor, Windsurf, OpenCode, Codex CLI and Gemini CLI as well as Claude Code. The engine is free and open source. A paid layer called CMEM Pro adds hosted observation, cloud sync across machines and a private MCP link, priced at $30/month with a 30 Day Free Trial, plus Heavy at $70/mo and CMEM Max at $100/mo for more included usage. If you pick your own model provider for compression, that provider may bill you separately.

Use cases

  • Carry context between coding sessions
  • Search past agent decisions and fixes
  • Share one memory across several agents
  • Generate CLAUDE.md folder timelines
  • Recall project history with natural language
  • Sync agent memory between machines

Who it's for

  • Developers using AI agents
  • Indie developers
  • Engineering teams

Why use claude-mem

  • Your agent stops starting each session from zero, so you spend less time re-explaining architecture and past decisions.
  • Local storage in SQLite keeps the memory on your own machine unless you turn on cloud sync.
  • One memory can serve several agents and editors, which helps if you switch between Claude Code, Cursor or Codex CLI.
  • A free open-source engine lets you try the idea before deciding whether hosted sync is worth paying for.
  • Search tools and a web viewer make it possible to find why something was done months later.

claude-mem features

  • Five lifecycle hooks that capture sessions, prompts and tool usage
  • AI-generated observations and session summaries
  • Context from earlier sessions injected at session start
  • SQLite storage with FTS5 full-text search
  • Optional Chroma vector index for semantic search
  • MCP and skill search tools for natural-language queries
  • Web viewer for the live memory stream
  • Privacy tags and optional regex-based secret redaction
  • 28 supported languages in multilingual modes
  • Hosted observation and cloud sync with CMEM Pro

claude-mem integrations

  • Claude Code
  • Cursor
  • Windsurf
  • OpenCode
  • OpenClaw
  • Codex CLI
  • Gemini CLI
  • VS Code
  • OpenRouter

How to get started with claude-mem

  1. Run npx claude-mem install, or add the plugin from the Claude Code marketplace, then restart your agent.
  2. Pick a memory provider during setup: CMEM Pro, your own OpenRouter or Gemini key, or your Anthropic plan.
  3. Work as usual while hooks capture prompts and tool results, and a worker turns them into observations and summaries.
  4. At the next session start, relevant context from recent sessions is injected automatically.
  5. Query older history through the MCP or skill search tools, or watch the memory stream in the web viewer.

claude-mem limitations

  • Needs Node.js 20 or higher, plus Bun and uv, which the installer adds if missing
  • Memory generation uses a model, so provider or plan usage may cost extra
  • MCP recall and capture are separate, and capture needs a supported integration
  • Public pricing for the TeamBrain team product has not been announced

claude-mem FAQ

How much does claude-mem cost?

The local engine is free. CMEM Pro is $30/month after a 30 Day Free Trial, Heavy is $70/mo and CMEM Max is $100/mo with billed overages above its included allowance.

Is there a free plan?

Yes. The open-source claude-mem engine is free to install and run on your own machine. Depending on your configuration, the model or provider you connect may bill separately.

What does CMEM Pro add?

CMEM Pro adds memory generation on a hosted observer, cloud sync for your observations across connected machines, and a private MCP link for recall from compatible clients.

Which agents does claude-mem work with?

It is built for Claude Code and also lists Cursor, Windsurf, OpenCode, OpenClaw, Codex CLI, Gemini CLI and VS Code as supported.
