openplayground

Open-source LLM playground you run on your laptop to test prompts and compare models from many providers side by side

Open source

What is openplayground?

openplayground is an open-source LLM playground that runs on your own laptop through pip or Docker. It connects to models from OpenAI, Anthropic, Cohere, Forefront, Hugging Face, Aleph Alpha, Replicate and Banana, and to local models through llama.cpp. The interface is a full playground with history, parameter tuning, keyboard shortcuts and log probabilities. A compare view sends the same prompt to several models at once, lets you set each model's parameters on its own and retry with different values. It also finds models already in your Hugging Face cache and lets you install new ones. Install it with pip install openplayground and start it with openplayground run, which launches a Flask server you can point at another port. API keys and model settings are kept in an optional Docker volume. The code is free and open source, and a hosted version is available at nat.dev; no paid plans are listed on the repository page.

Use cases

  • Compare LLM outputs for the same prompt
  • Tune model parameters such as temperature
  • Test prompts across multiple providers
  • Run local llama.cpp models in a playground UI
  • Inspect log probabilities of model outputs
  • Add custom models through a JSON config

Who it's for

  • Developers
  • Prompt engineers
  • AI researchers

Why use openplayground

  • Test one prompt across several providers without switching tools.
  • Run it locally, so API keys and settings stay in your own environment.
  • Adjust parameters per model to see how each setting changes output.
  • Combine hosted APIs and local models in one interface.
  • Easy to extend because models and defaults are defined in a JSON file.

openplayground features

  • Models from OpenAI, Anthropic, Cohere, Forefront, Hugging Face, Aleph Alpha, Replicate and Banana
  • Local inference through llama.cpp
  • Side-by-side model comparison with a shared prompt
  • Per-model parameter tuning and retry
  • History, keyboard shortcuts and log probabilities
  • Automatic detection of models in your Hugging Face cache
  • Add new models and providers via server/models.json
  • Flask server that can run in Docker
  • Layout that works on a phone

How to get started with openplayground

  1. Install with pip install openplayground, or run the Docker image.
  2. Start the server with openplayground run, optionally choosing a port.
  3. Add API keys for the providers you use, or point to local models.
  4. Write a prompt, pick a model and adjust its parameters in the playground.
  5. Open the compare page to run the same prompt on several models and review the results.

openplayground limitations

  • You need your own API keys for hosted model providers
  • Adding a new model needs a generation method written in server/app.py
  • The README lists token and cost counters as ideas, not shipped features

openplayground pricing

openplayground is open source, so you can use and self-host it for free.

Prices can change and may vary by country or exclude tax. Check the official pricing page.
