LanceDB

Open-source vector database and multimodal lakehouse for AI search, retrieval, feature engineering and training data.

Open source

What is LanceDB?

LanceDB is a data layer for AI teams that stores vectors, metadata and raw multimodal data, such as images, video, audio and text, together in versioned tables built on the open-source Lance format. The free LanceDB OSS library is embedded in your own application process and has client SDKs for Python, TypeScript and Rust, which makes it a common choice as a vector database for RAG, semantic search, hybrid search, agent memory and recommendations. LanceDB Enterprise runs the same table model as a distributed cluster, either managed or in your own cloud account (BYOC), with a tiered cache, OpenTelemetry monitoring, the Geneva feature engineering tool, and a stated target of 100B+ row scale. Because both editions use the Lance format, data moves between them without conversion. The vendor does not publish an Enterprise price list, so treat Enterprise as contact-sales pricing, while OSS is open source.

Use cases

  • Store and search embeddings for RAG
  • Run hybrid vector and full-text search
  • Give AI agents persistent semantic memory
  • Curate multimodal training datasets
  • Feed PyTorch training jobs from object storage
  • Backfill derived features across large tables

Who it's for

  • ML engineers
  • AI developers
  • Data engineers
  • Enterprise AI teams

Why use LanceDB

  • Keeping vectors, metadata and source data in one versioned table removes the need to stitch several storage and retrieval systems together.
  • The embedded OSS library installs locally in a few steps, so prototyping needs no server.
  • The same Lance format underlies OSS and Enterprise, so moving to a cluster does not require a data conversion step.
  • One table can serve retrieval, dataset curation, feature engineering and training reads.
  • Enterprise lists SOC 2 Type II and HIPAA coverage plus private connectivity for regulated environments.

LanceDB features

  • Embedded open-source library with Python, TypeScript and Rust SDKs
  • Vector, full-text and hybrid search with reranking, filtering and SQL
  • Versioned multimodal tables for vectors, metadata and raw data
  • Schema evolution and data versioning
  • PyTorch loading with projected, shuffled, random-access reads
  • Enterprise tiered cache and horizontal query throughput
  • Geneva feature engineering for derived columns and backfills
  • OpenTelemetry metrics and traces
  • Managed or bring-your-own-cloud deployment

LanceDB integrations

  • PyTorch
  • DuckDB
  • Spark
  • OpenTelemetry
  • LlamaIndex
  • Delta Lake
  • Apache Iceberg

How to get started with LanceDB

  1. Install the open-source LanceDB library and connect from Python, TypeScript or Rust.
  2. Create a table with embeddings, metadata and source data, such as images or text.
  3. Query with vector, full-text or hybrid search, add filters or rerank results.
  4. Move to LanceDB Enterprise when you need distributed scale, monitoring or private deployment.

LanceDB limitations

  • LanceDB OSS runs in a single process and shares CPU with the host application
  • Distributed search, indexing and compaction are marked as coming soon for Enterprise
  • Enterprise pricing is not published; contact LanceDB for a quote
  • Private deployments and BYOC clusters are arranged through the LanceDB team

LanceDB FAQ

Is LanceDB open source?

Yes. LanceDB OSS is an open-source embedded library with Python, TypeScript and Rust SDKs, and it is built on the open-source Lance format. LanceDB Enterprise is a separate production offering.

How much does LanceDB cost?

LanceDB OSS is free to use. The vendor does not list a price for LanceDB Enterprise, so contact the LanceDB team for a quote.

What is the difference between LanceDB OSS and Enterprise?

OSS runs inside your application process, while Enterprise runs as a distributed cluster across many machines with managed or BYOC deployment, a tiered cache and monitoring. Both use the Lance format.

Does LanceDB support hybrid search?

Yes. According to the documentation, you can combine vector, full-text and hybrid search with reranking, filtering and SQL when building search and retrieval.

Can LanceDB be used for RAG and agent memory?

Yes. LanceDB describes production retrieval workloads such as semantic search, RAG, agent memory and recommendation systems running on the same tables used for training data.

What are alternatives to LanceDB?

Common alternatives include Pinecone, Weaviate, Qdrant, Chroma, Milvus and pgvector.
