SwarmVault

Open-source, local-first tool that compiles docs, code and URLs into a markdown wiki and knowledge graph for AI agents.

What is SwarmVault?

SwarmVault is a knowledge compiler that works local-first, following the LLM Wiki pattern described by Andrej Karpathy. You feed it documents, books, datasets, screenshots, URLs, transcripts or a code repository, and it keeps the raw sources untouched, writes a markdown wiki, and builds a knowledge graph with provenance for every claim. A viewer lets you inspect the graph, review queues and search. Query and chat answers are saved back into the vault, lint checks flag stale sources and conflicting claims, and an MCP server exposes the vault to agents such as Claude, Cursor and Codex. It starts with one command and runs offline with a built-in heuristic provider, so no API keys are required; OpenAI, Anthropic, Gemini, Ollama or any OpenAI-compatible API are optional for richer synthesis. Researchers, developers and people building a personal knowledge base use it. It is open source with a desktop app and an npm CLI, and no paid plans are listed.

Use cases

  • Build a knowledge graph from a code repo
  • Compile research papers into a wiki
  • Give AI agents persistent memory over MCP
  • Keep a personal knowledge base locally
  • Detect stale or conflicting sources
  • Export a wiki as llms.txt for other tools

Who it's for

  • Researchers
  • Developers
  • Knowledge workers
  • AI agent users

Why use SwarmVault

  • Everything lives as local files you can inspect, version and back up.
  • Knowledge compounds in a persistent wiki instead of disappearing after each chat answer.
  • Works with no API keys at first, so you can try it fully offline.
  • Agents can read the vault over MCP, giving them durable memory about your project or research.

SwarmVault features

  • Raw sources kept as immutable files
  • Auto-generated markdown wiki pages
  • Knowledge graph with provenance and communities
  • Offline heuristic provider needing no API keys
  • Optional OpenAI, Anthropic, Gemini and Ollama providers
  • Anti-drift linting for stale sources and missing citations
  • MCP server and agent rule installs for Claude, Cursor and Codex
  • Context packs and task ledgers for agent work
  • Hybrid search with optional rerank
  • Graph exports including HTML, SVG, GraphML and Obsidian

How to get started with SwarmVault

  1. Install the CLI with npm and run the quickstart command on a repo, folder or URL.
  2. SwarmVault ingests sources, records their content hashes and compiles wiki pages and a graph.
  3. Open the graph viewer to inspect nodes, approvals, candidates and search results.
  4. Ask questions or start chat sessions; useful answers are saved back to the vault.
  5. Run lint and watch jobs to keep the vault fresh, and expose it to agents over MCP.

SwarmVault limitations

  • Requires Node 24 or later for the CLI
  • Setup and daily use are command-line oriented
  • Richer synthesis needs a model provider you configure
  • Part of the SwarmClaw network, so docs are tied to that ecosystem

SwarmVault pricing

SwarmVault is open source, so you can use and self-host it for free.

Prices can change and may vary by country or exclude tax. Check the official pricing page.

  1. Cognee

Open-source memory engine for AI agents that combines vector search, knowledge graphs and relational storage, with a hosted cloud.

  2. Glean

Enterprise AI platform that searches company apps, answers questions with permissions respected, and runs agents on your own data.

  3. Guru

Company knowledge platform that verifies and governs internal information, then serves cited answers to employees and AI tools.

  4. Mem0

Memory layer for AI agents and apps, available as an open-source package or a managed platform that keeps user context across sessions.

AI built into the Notion workspace: agents, enterprise search across connected apps, AI meeting notes and database autofill.

  6. Zep

Managed memory and context platform for AI agents, built on the Graphiti knowledge graph, with Python, TypeScript and Go SDKs.

SwarmVault FAQ

How much does SwarmVault cost?

No paid plans are listed. It is open source, and you only pay for any external model provider you choose to connect.

Is there a free plan?

The software is free to install. The built-in heuristic provider runs offline with no API keys.

Is SwarmVault open source?

Yes. The site calls it an open-source LLM Wiki and knowledge graph builder.

Does SwarmVault work with AI agents?

Yes. It can set up rules for Claude, Cursor and Codex, keep task ledgers and expose the vault over MCP to compatible clients.

Who is SwarmVault for?

It suits researchers, developers and individuals who want a durable, inspectable knowledge base instead of one-off document chat.

What are alternatives to SwarmVault?

Alternatives include Mem0, Obsidian, Glean and other knowledge-base or agent-memory tools. They vary in local-first design, graph features and hosting.
