Gito

Open-source AI code reviewer that checks GitHub pull requests and local changes with the language model provider you choose.

Open source

What is Gito?

Gito is an open-source AI code reviewer that finds problems in GitHub pull requests or in the changes sitting in your local repository. It runs as a Python package called gito.bot, either inside a GitHub Actions or GitLab CI workflow that posts its findings as pull request comments, or from the command line with the gito review command. You supply the model: OpenAI-compatible APIs, Anthropic, Google, local services such as Ollama and vLLM, or coding-agent command-line tools all work. Your code goes straight from the runner or your machine to that provider, and Gito keeps no copy. Per-repository settings in a .gito/config.toml file change the review prompts, report templates, severity levels and mention triggers, and Jira and Linear integrations are available. Gito is free and MIT-licensed, and the only spend is whatever your model provider charges.

Use cases

  • Review pull requests automatically in CI
  • Check local branch changes before opening a PR
  • Catch security and performance issues early
  • Enforce team review rules with custom prompts
  • Run code review on a self-hosted local model
  • Link review findings to Jira or Linear

Who it's for

  • Solo developers
  • Engineering teams
  • Open source maintainers
  • DevOps engineers

Why use Gito

  • It does not tie you to one model vendor, so you can switch providers or keep reviews on a local model.
  • Source code travels from your runner to your chosen provider with no middleman, and Gito stores nothing.
  • Pull requests get a first-pass review within a CI workflow, before a human reviewer looks at them.
  • Review prompts, severity levels and report templates can be tuned to each repository.
  • The code is MIT-licensed, so you can audit it and there is no subscription.

  • Runs on local models such as Ollama, vLLM, llama.cpp and LM Studio
  • Posts results as PR comments and reacts to maintainer mentions
  • Project settings in .gito/config.toml for prompts, templates and severity

  • Windows standalone installer and pip package

How to get started with Gito

  1. Add a gito-code-review workflow file to .github/workflows, or run gito deploy to generate one.
  2. Store your LLM_API_KEY as a repository secret and choose the API type and model.
  3. Open or update a pull request so the workflow installs gito.bot and runs the review.
  4. Gito posts its findings as a pull request comment and saves report files as workflow artifacts.
  5. Locally, run gito setup once, then gito review on a branch to check changes before you push.

Gito limitations

  • You bring and pay for your own LLM provider and API key
  • Cannot edit files in .github/workflows when acting on PR comments, due to a GitHub token restriction
  • Bitbucket support is listed as planned, and GitLab as beta

Gito pricing

Gito FAQ

How much does Gito cost?

Gito itself is free and MIT-licensed, with no paid plans listed on its page. You pay your chosen model provider for the API usage, unless you run a local model.

Is Gito open source?

Yes. The project is licensed under the MIT License and the source is on GitHub, so you can audit every line.

Which language models does Gito work with?

OpenAI-compatible APIs such as Mistral, xAI, Azure, Amazon Bedrock and OpenRouter, the Anthropic API, the Google API, local services like Ollama, vLLM and LM Studio, and coding-agent CLIs such as Claude Code and Gemini CLI.

Does Gito send my code to its own servers?

No. It is a stateless client-side tool. Code goes from your CI runner or machine straight to the provider you configured, and with a local model it never leaves your network.

Which Git platforms and trackers does Gito support?

GitHub is supported, GitLab is in beta, Bitbucket is planned, and local use works from the command line. Jira and Linear are supported as issue trackers.

How do I run Gito locally?

Install gito.bot with pip or the Windows installer, run gito setup to enter your model details, then run gito review inside the repository on the branch you want checked.

What are alternatives to Gito?

Other AI code review tools include PR-Agent, CodeRabbit, Qodo, Greptile and Sourcery. Gito differs by being fully open source and model-agnostic.
