What is Amazon Bedrock Agents?

Amazon Bedrock Agents lets developers create generative AI agents that carry out multistep tasks across company systems. You choose a foundation model, write instructions in natural language, and the agent breaks a request into steps, calls the APIs you connect, retrieves facts from your knowledge bases and asks for more information when it needs it. The service supports memory retention across interactions, a secure code interpreter for analysis and charts, Amazon Bedrock Guardrails for safety, and multi-agent collaboration in which a supervisor agent coordinates specialized agents. AWS says new customers can no longer sign up for Bedrock Agents Classic and directs them to Amazon Bedrock AgentCore for similar capabilities. AgentCore pricing is separate: it is billed on consumption with no upfront commitment or minimum fee, and new AWS customers can receive up to $200 in Free Tier credits. Those AgentCore terms do not apply to Bedrock Agents Classic. Model usage on Bedrock is priced per provider and model, and batch inference on selected models costs 50% less than on-demand.

Why use Amazon Bedrock Agents

  • An agent can be set up in a few steps, so teams skip building their own orchestration loop.
  • Agents connect to your APIs and knowledge bases, which lets them act on real company data rather than only chat.
  • Multi-agent collaboration splits complex workflows into smaller tasks handled by specialized agents.
  • You can pick from many model providers and move work to cheaper batch or Flex tiers.
  • AgentCore's pay-for-use billing means no minimum fee or upfront commitment.

  1. In the AWS console, pick a foundation model and write instructions describing the agent's job.
  2. Connect action APIs and knowledge bases that the agent can use to complete the work.
  3. The agent plans the steps, calls the needed APIs, retrieves information and asks for details when missing.
  4. Add memory, a code interpreter, Guardrails or additional agents, then monitor usage and cost in AWS.

Amazon Bedrock Agents limitations

  • Bedrock Agents Classic is closed to new customers
  • No flat price exists; cost depends on model, region, tier and consumed resources
  • Some Anthropic models are gated and require approval from the account team
  • AgentCore billing includes system overhead and network transfer at standard EC2 rates
