Agent Skills

Open standard for packaging instructions, scripts and references in a SKILL.md folder that AI agents load on demand.

Open source

What is Agent Skills?

Agent Skills is an open format that lets you teach an AI agent a specialised task by writing a folder instead of a prompt. Each skill is a directory with a SKILL.md file holding a name, a description and step-by-step instructions, and it can also carry scripts, reference documents and templates. Anthropic originally created the format and released it as an open standard, and a growing list of agent products now read it. Agents load skills in three stages: they read only the name and description at startup, pull in the full SKILL.md when a task matches, and open bundled files only when the instructions point to them. That keeps context small even when many skills are installed. The agentskills.io site hosts the specification, an overview for skill authors and a guide for developers adding skills support to their own agent or tool. No paid plans are listed on the site, and its pricing URL returns a page-not-found message.

Use cases

  • Package team workflows as reusable skills
  • Give an agent domain expertise on demand
  • Share one skill across several agent products
  • Bundle scripts with agent instructions
  • Add skills support to an agent client
  • Version-control agent know-how in a repository

Who it's for

  • Agent developers
  • Skill authors
  • Engineering teams

Why use Agent Skills

  • Write a skill once and reuse it across any agent that supports the format, rather than rewriting prompts per product.
  • Progressive loading keeps the context footprint small, so an agent can hold many skills without paying for all of them upfront.
  • Skills are plain folders, so they can be version-controlled, reviewed and shared like any other code.
  • Scripts and reference files can ship beside the instructions, giving agents repeatable, auditable procedures.
  • An open specification and a client guide make it practical to add support to your own agent.

Agent Skills features

  • SKILL.md file with name, description and instructions
  • Optional scripts, references and assets folders
  • Three-stage loading: discovery, activation, execution
  • Low-cost catalog of about 50 to 100 tokens per skill
  • Full format specification
  • Client implementation guide for agent developers
  • Project-level and user-level skill scopes
  • Open standard with community discussion on GitHub and Discord

How to get started with Agent Skills

  1. Create a folder for the skill and add a SKILL.md file with a name, a description and the instructions.
  2. Optionally add scripts, references or assets folders for code, documentation and templates.
  3. Place the folder in a project-level or user-level skills directory that your agent client scans.
  4. At startup the agent reads only each skill's name and description to learn what is available.
  5. When a task matches a description, the agent loads the full SKILL.md and runs any bundled code it needs.

Agent Skills limitations

  • It is a format and specification, not an agent you can chat with
  • A skill only helps in agent products that support the format
  • Project-level skills from untrusted repositories need a trust check before loading

Agent Skills FAQ

Who created the Agent Skills format?

Anthropic originally developed it and then released it as an open standard. The site says a growing number of agent products have adopted it.

How much does Agent Skills cost?

The site lists no pricing or paid plans, and its pricing page returns a not-found message. It presents Agent Skills as an open standard, so there is nothing to subscribe to.

How do Agent Skills work?

Agents load skills progressively: first the name and description of each skill, then the full SKILL.md when a task matches, then any scripts or reference files the instructions mention.

Which tools support Agent Skills?

The documentation says a large number of AI tools and agentic clients support it and points to a Client Showcase page that lists examples.

Can I add Agent Skills support to my own agent?

Yes. The site has an implementation guide covering skill discovery, parsing SKILL.md files, telling the model about skills and loading their content into context.

Is Agent Skills open source?

It is published as an open standard that welcomes contributions through GitHub and Discord. The format is open, though it is a specification rather than a software product.
