funes

Hugging Face's open-source command-line memory that indexes Claude Code, Codex, pi and Hermes sessions so agents can recall past work.

Open source

What is funes?

funes is an open-source command-line tool from Hugging Face that gives AI coding agents a long-term memory. It indexes your past sessions from Claude Code, Codex, pi and Hermes into one searchable store, and once you run the add command for an agent, that agent gets recall and get tools it can call on its own in the middle of a task. Each hit shows which agent produced it, so work started in one agent can be picked up in another. The memory is a dataset that you can push to a private Hugging Face Hub repo, and a teammate or another machine can recall from it with a single flag. You can also use the ask command to have a coding agent answer a question from a memory and name the sessions it used. funes redacts credentials when it indexes and refuses to push chunks that still contain a secret. It is licensed under Apache-2.0, has no paid tier, and ships prebuilt binaries for Linux and Apple Silicon Macs.

Use cases

  • Recall past decisions made by a coding agent
  • Share agent memory with teammates
  • Search sessions across several coding agents
  • Answer questions grounded in earlier sessions
  • Continue a task in a different agent
  • Publish a project's decision history as a dataset

Who it's for

  • Developers using coding agents
  • Engineering teams
  • AI tooling builders

Why use funes

  • You stop re-explaining earlier choices to each new agent session because past rationale and findings are searchable.
  • One memory spans several agents, so switching from Claude Code to Codex does not lose context.
  • Because the memory is a Hub dataset, a teammate or second machine can reuse it with one flag.
  • Answers from the ask command name the sessions they came from, which makes them easier to check.
  • Secret redaction and a push gate lower the risk of publishing credentials by accident.

funes features

  • Indexes Claude Code, Codex, pi and Hermes sessions into one memory
  • Agents call recall and get tools on their own during a task
  • Every hit shows which agent it came from
  • Publish the memory to a Hugging Face dataset, private by default
  • Ask command that returns one answer naming its source sessions
  • Credential redaction at index time and a gate that blocks pushes containing secrets
  • Hook that keeps the index current each turn for Claude, Codex and Hermes
  • Local embedding and reranking models
  • Installer that verifies the release checksum, plus an update command

funes integrations

  • Claude Code
  • Codex
  • pi
  • Hermes
  • Hugging Face Hub
  • MCP

How to get started with funes

  1. Run the installer, which downloads the matching prebuilt binary, verifies its checksum and puts funes on your PATH.
  2. Add funes to your agent with a command such as funes add claude, codex, pi or hermes.
  3. Let it index your sessions, and bind the host to a Hugging Face memory if you want to publish and share.
  4. Work as usual: the agent recalls relevant sessions itself, or you can run recall or ask against your own or a shared memory.

funes limitations

  • Command-line tool, not a hosted chat app
  • Integrations for agents beyond the four named are maintained by their own authors
  • Prebuilt binaries cover Linux x86_64, Linux aarch64 and Apple Silicon macOS
  • Sends an anonymous install id to the Hub unless telemetry is turned off

funes pricing

funes is open source, so you can use and self-host it for free.

Prices can change and may vary by country or exclude tax. Check the official pricing page.

  1. agentmemory

Open-source memory server that lets AI coding agents like Claude Code and Cursor recall past sessions, with local-first search.

  2. Hindsight

MIT-licensed memory engine from Vectorize that lets AI agents retain, recall and learn from experience, self-hosted or as a managed cloud.

  3. Letta

Platform, formerly MemGPT, for building stateful AI agents with persistent memory, from a terminal app, SDK or API.

  4. Mem0

Memory layer for AI agents and apps, available as an open-source package or a managed platform that keeps user context across sessions.

  5. Memori

Memory infrastructure for LLM apps and agents that captures conversations and tool traces as structured memories, in the cloud or on your own database.

  6. Zep

Managed memory and context platform for AI agents, built on the Graphiti knowledge graph, with Python, TypeScript and Go SDKs.

funes FAQ

How much does funes cost?

funes is free. It is released under the Apache-2.0 license and the repository mentions no paid plans, though a Hugging Face account is needed to publish memories to the Hub.

Which agents does funes work with?

It indexes sessions from Claude Code, Codex, pi and Hermes. Other agents can join through community integrations or by writing sessions in the funes JSONL format.

Can I share a funes memory with my team?

Yes. Your memory is a dataset you can push to a Hugging Face dataset repo, and a teammate or another machine can recall from it. Repos funes creates are private by default.

Is funes open source?

Yes. The code is on GitHub under Apache-2.0, and the README describes how to build it from source as well as how to install prebuilt binaries.

Does funes send my data anywhere?

It runs local embedding and reranking models and sends an anonymous install id to the Hugging Face Hub, which you can disable with DO_NOT_TRACK=1 or FUNES_NO_TELEMETRY=1. Publishing a memory sends its data to your Hub repo.

What are alternatives to funes?

Agent memory tools such as Mem0, Letta and Zep are alternatives, though they are mostly memory layers for custom agents rather than an index of coding-agent session history.
