Moltworker

Cloudflare's proof of concept for self-hosting the OpenClaw personal AI agent on Workers and Sandboxes instead of a Mac mini.

Open source

What is Moltworker?

Moltworker is a Cloudflare project that shows how to run OpenClaw, the open-source personal AI assistant formerly called Moltbot and Clawdbot, on Cloudflare's own platform rather than on dedicated hardware such as a Mac mini. It is a middleware Worker plus adapted scripts: an entrypoint Worker routes API calls and proxies traffic to an isolated Sandbox container where the standard agent gateway runs, with an administration UI and Cloudflare Access protecting both. Cloudflare R2 provides persistent storage, Browser Rendering lets the agent control a headless browser, and AI Gateway can sit between the agent and model providers for cost visibility, logs and fallbacks. The project is a self-hosted, experimental proof of concept aimed at developers, and the source is free to use. Running it needs a Workers paid plan because Sandbox containers require one, and the container adds compute costs on top of whatever model provider you use.

Use cases

  • Self-host a personal AI assistant
  • Run OpenClaw on Cloudflare Workers
  • Experiment with Sandbox containers for agents
  • Control a headless browser from an agent
  • Route agent model calls through AI Gateway
  • Protect an agent admin UI with Cloudflare Access

Who it's for

  • Cloudflare developers
  • Self-hosting enthusiasts
  • AI agent tinkerers

Why use Moltworker

  • Runs a personal agent without buying and maintaining dedicated hardware.
  • Sandboxes isolate the agent's code execution from the rest of your account.
  • AI Gateway shows cost, logs and analytics, and lets you switch models without redeploying the agent.
  • Persistent storage in R2 keeps agent data across restarts.
  • Cloudflare Access can gate the admin UI so only approved users reach it.

Moltworker features

  • Entrypoint Worker that acts as API router and proxy
  • OpenClaw gateway running in a Cloudflare Sandbox container
  • Administration UI protected by Cloudflare Access
  • R2 object storage for persistent data
  • Browser Rendering for headless browser control
  • Optional AI Gateway with BYOK or Unified Billing
  • Model or provider fallbacks through AI Gateway

Moltworker integrations

  • Cloudflare Workers
  • Cloudflare Sandbox SDK
  • Cloudflare R2
  • Cloudflare Access
  • Cloudflare AI Gateway
  • Browser Rendering
  • Anthropic

How to get started with Moltworker

  1. Deploy the Moltworker Worker to a Cloudflare account that has a Workers paid plan.
  2. Create an AI Gateway instance, enable your model provider and set the base URL environment variable so the agent uses it.
  3. Configure Cloudflare Access to protect the administration UI and API routes.
  4. Connect R2 for persistent storage and, if wanted, Browser Rendering for web browsing.
  5. Start the Sandbox container, which runs the standard OpenClaw gateway and its chat integrations.

Moltworker limitations

  • It is an experimental proof of concept, not an officially supported product
  • It may break without notice
  • Sandbox containers require a Workers paid plan and add compute costs
  • You need a model provider key such as Anthropic, or AI Gateway Unified Billing credits

  6. ZeroClaw

Open-source personal AI agent runtime in one Rust binary, connecting 70+ model providers to 30+ chat channels on hardware you control.

Moltworker FAQ

How much does Moltworker cost?

Moltworker itself is not sold as a product and the vendor lists no plans for it. You need a Workers paid plan for Sandbox containers, plus compute costs and model usage through your provider or AI Gateway credits.

Is there a free plan for Moltworker?

No free tier is described. Running it requires Sandbox containers, which need a Workers paid plan according to the project, so budget for Cloudflare usage as well as model costs.

Who is Moltworker for?

Developers comfortable with Cloudflare who want to self-host a personal AI agent and are happy to work with an experimental proof of concept.

Does Moltworker work with AI Gateway?

Yes. You point the agent's base URL at an AI Gateway endpoint, which adds logs, analytics, cost visibility and model fallbacks. Gateway supports bring-your-own-key and Unified Billing.

Is Moltworker open source?

Yes, it is published as a self-hostable open-source repository and describes itself as experimental and unsupported.

What are alternatives to Moltworker?

Alternatives include running OpenClaw directly on your own hardware, or other self-hosted agent frameworks such as Letta, Open Interpreter and Agent Zero.
