Agent Zero

Open-source agentic framework that runs an autonomous AI assistant in Docker with its own tools, memory, plugins and skills.

Open source

What is Agent Zero?

Agent Zero is an open-source framework for building and running autonomous AI agents that work from their own computer environment. Instead of a fixed set of features, the agent uses and creates tools as it goes, keeps a memory you can browse and edit, and follows workflows that you can inspect step by step. It runs sandboxed in Docker, and an A0 CLI connector can link it to your local terminal, project files and browser when you choose. You can install it with the desktop Agent Zero Launcher, a one-line A0 Install script for macOS, Linux and Windows, or directly with Docker, then connect OpenRouter or another cloud or local model provider through a first-run wizard. A built-in Plugin Hub offers community plugins with automated security scans, and skills, projects, subagents, a task scheduler and MCP and A2A support extend it. The website lists no paid plans, and the company behind it is Agent Zero, s.r.o. in Brno.

Use cases

  • Run an autonomous assistant in a sandbox
  • Automate multi-step research tasks
  • Build custom agents for specific workflows
  • Run security sweeps and vulnerability analysis
  • Schedule recurring agent jobs
  • Extend the agent with community plugins

Who it's for

  • Developers
  • AI builders
  • Security teams
  • Researchers

Why use Agent Zero

  • The agent runs in a Docker sandbox, so it can use real system tools without touching your host unless you grant access.
  • Memory, prompts and tools are open and editable, giving more transparency than closed assistants.
  • You pick the model provider, including local models, and can switch with named presets.
  • Plugins and skills let you wrap a workflow once and reuse or share it.
  • Several install routes, from a desktop Launcher to a one-line script, suit both beginners and server users.

How to get started with Agent Zero

  1. Install Agent Zero with the desktop Launcher, the A0 Install script for your terminal, or direct Docker.
  2. Open the Web UI and use the first-run wizard to connect OpenRouter or another cloud or local model provider.
  3. Give the agent a task in chat; it plans, uses its tools and can create new ones to finish the work.
  4. Optionally connect your terminal, files and browser through the A0 CLI, or add skills and plugins from the Plugin Hub.
  5. Review the transparent workflow and memory, schedule recurring tasks, and update or back up the instance from the Launcher.

Agent Zero limitations

  • Needs Docker, or the desktop Launcher that sets Docker up for you
  • You supply model access, for example an OpenRouter key or a local model
  • Community plugins run code inside Agent Zero, so they should be reviewed before enabling

Agent Zero FAQ

Is Agent Zero free and open source?

The site describes it as an open-source framework maintained by Agent Zero, s.r.o., and it lists no paid plans or prices. You still pay for any model provider you connect.

How do I install Agent Zero?

Use the desktop Agent Zero Launcher, run the A0 Install command in a terminal on macOS, Linux or Windows, or start it directly with Docker if Docker is already running.

Which AI models does Agent Zero work with?

The first-run wizard defaults to OpenRouter, and you can set up another cloud or local provider. Model presets let you save fast, cheap, local, balanced or maximum-power setups.

Does Agent Zero support plugins and MCP?

Yes. A Plugin Hub offers community plugins with one-click install and automated security scans, and Agent Zero supports Model Context Protocol and Agent-to-Agent flows.

Can Agent Zero access my local files?

It stays sandboxed in Docker by default. You can connect your terminal, project files and browser through the A0 CLI connector, and the Launcher lets you opt in to host access per instance.

What are alternatives to Agent Zero?

The site compares its openness with closed assistants such as ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, Manus and Grok. Open-source agent frameworks such as AutoGPT and OpenHands cover similar ground.
