What is Diffblue Cover?

Diffblue Cover is a test-writing product for Java teams, and its newer Diffblue Testing Agent also supports Python 3.9 and later. Instead of prompting an assistant one test at a time, you point the agent at a class, a method or a whole repository, and its batch mode works through the code on its own. Every generated test is checked so that it compiles, passes and adds coverage, and failed or flaky tests are never counted. The agent extends GitHub Copilot CLI and Claude Code, and the older Cover editions add an IntelliJ plugin, a command-line tool, CI pipeline integration and reporting. Pricing for the Testing Agent starts at $1500 for 5,000 net new lines of coverage, which works out to $0.30 per line, and larger multi-repo deployments get custom enterprise packages. The Community edition of the IntelliJ plugin is free for up to 25 methods a month.

Use cases

  • Generate unit tests for legacy Java code
  • Raise code coverage across a repository
  • Write regression tests before a refactor
  • Add tests to a CI pipeline
  • Check coverage gains with JaCoCo
  • Cover Python modules with generated tests

Who it's for

  • Java developers
  • QA and test engineers
  • Engineering managers
  • Modernization teams

Why use Diffblue Cover

  • You pay for net new coverage lines you can confirm with JaCoCo or Cobertura, not for seats or API calls.
  • Tests that fail to compile, fail to pass or are flaky are never counted, so you do not review broken output.
  • It layers onto tools your developers already use, including Copilot CLI and Claude Code.
  • Batch mode removes the file-by-file prompting that general coding assistants require.
  • Enterprise packages add SSO, SLA terms and on-premises deployment for regulated industries.

  • SonarQube

How to get started with Diffblue Cover

  1. The agent records your existing code coverage as the baseline.
  2. It generates tests across the chosen classes, methods or repository and checks each one compiles, passes and adds coverage.
  3. Accepted tests land in your project through the IntelliJ plugin, the CLI or a CI pipeline run.
  4. The bill is the gap between your baseline and the new coverage, which you can confirm with a standard coverage tool.

Diffblue Cover limitations

  • Community edition is capped at 25 methods per month and Developer edition starts at 100
  • Licence checks need a live internet connection except on Enterprise offline licences
  • Cover works per project or module, not on a chosen subset of classes inside one module
  • Supported languages are Java and Python only

Diffblue Cover FAQ

How much does Diffblue Cover cost?

The Diffblue Testing Agent starts at $1500 for 5,000 net new lines of coverage, an effective $0.30 per line. Enterprise-scale deployments use custom packages with volume pricing. Developer editions (Basic, Pro, Ultra) list monthly method limits, but no price is published for them; check Diffblue's pricing page or contact the vendor.

Is there a free plan for Diffblue Cover?

The Cover Plugin Community edition is free to use and is meant for evaluation by individual developers. It allows tests for up to 25 methods per month and needs product verification to activate.

What plans does Diffblue Cover have?

Cover is licensed as Community, Developer, Teams and Enterprise editions. Community and Developer are single-user and limited by methods tested per month. Teams covers 10 user licences and up to 250,000 lines of code, and Enterprise covers 20 licences from 250,000 lines.

Who is Diffblue Cover for?

It suits Java teams that need to raise test coverage on existing code, often before modernizing or refactoring legacy applications, and engineering groups that want AI-written tests verified before they merge.

Does Diffblue Cover work with other tools?

Yes. The Testing Agent extends GitHub Copilot CLI and Claude Code, Cover has an IntelliJ plugin, and Cover Pipeline plugs into CI/CD. Coverage numbers can be checked with JaCoCo, Cobertura or similar tools.

How does Diffblue count lines of code or usage?

Commercial editions are priced per instance per year by lines of source code, counted from JaCoCo output and excluding comments, whitespace and test code. Community and Developer editions count methods tested, once per method however many tests are written.

What are alternatives to Diffblue Cover?

Other AI test generation options include GitHub Copilot, Qodo, Tabnine, Codium and general coding agents such as Claude Code. Diffblue differs by verifying each test and charging for coverage added.
