Kubeflow

Open source, Kubernetes-native AI platform made of modular projects for training, tuning, pipelines, notebooks and model management.

Open source

What is Kubeflow?

Kubeflow is a community-run open source platform that runs data, AI/ML and high-performance computing workloads on Kubernetes. Rather than one monolithic product, it is a set of subprojects that map to stages of the AI lifecycle: Spark Operator for data preparation, Notebooks for interactive development, Trainer for distributed training and LLM fine-tuning, Katib for hyperparameter tuning, Hub for model metadata and artifacts, and Pipelines for building portable ML workflows. A Python SDK aims to let users run workloads at scale without learning Kubernetes, and a Central Dashboard gathers the web interfaces. You can install individual projects on their own or deploy the full Kubeflow AI reference platform from manifests or a packaged distribution from vendors such as Canonical, Red Hat and Microsoft Azure. The project is free software, and the site announces that it is now a CNCF graduated project.

Use cases

  • Build portable ML pipelines on Kubernetes
  • Fine-tune LLMs with distributed training
  • Tune hyperparameters with AutoML
  • Run notebooks for model development
  • Track models and artifacts in a registry
  • Prepare data with Spark on Kubernetes

Who it's for

  • ML engineers
  • Platform administrators
  • Data scientists
  • AI practitioners

Why use Kubeflow

  • Because the projects are modular, you can adopt only the piece you need, such as Pipelines, without installing everything.
  • Workflows are portable between a laptop, on-premises clusters and cloud providers.
  • There is no license fee, and the code and governance are open to the community.
  • A Python-centred SDK lowers the amount of Kubernetes knowledge data scientists need.
  • Several vendors offer packaged distributions if you prefer a supported install.

Kubeflow features

  • Kubeflow Pipelines for authoring workflows in the Python SDK
  • Kubeflow Trainer for distributed training across PyTorch, JAX, DeepSpeed and more
  • Kubeflow Katib for hyperparameter tuning, early stopping and architecture search
  • Kubeflow Notebooks for interactive development environments
  • Kubeflow Hub (formerly Model Registry) for model metadata and versions
  • Kubeflow Spark Operator for running Spark applications
  • Kubeflow SDK with unified Python APIs
  • Central Dashboard that links component interfaces
  • Kubeflow MCP Server listed among the subprojects

Kubeflow integrations

  • Kubernetes
  • KServe
  • Spark
  • PyTorch
  • JAX
  • HuggingFace
  • DeepSpeed
  • Google Cloud Vertex AI Pipelines

How to get started with Kubeflow

  1. Provision a Kubernetes cluster, locally with Kind or Minikube or on a cloud such as EKS, AKS or GKE.
  2. Install either individual Kubeflow projects or the full AI reference platform using manifests or a packaged distribution.
  3. Develop in Notebooks, then define workflows with the Kubeflow Pipelines Python SDK.
  4. Train and tune models with Trainer and Katib, store them in Hub, and serve them with a tool such as KServe.

Kubeflow limitations

  • Requires a Kubernetes cluster and the skills to operate it
  • The full reference platform bundles many components that you install and maintain
  • Packaged distributions are supported by their maintainers, not endorsed by the Kubeflow community
  • No hosted offering or published pricing on the site

Kubeflow pricing

Kubeflow is open source, so you can use and self-host it for free.

Prices can change and may vary by country or exclude tax. Check the official pricing page.

Kubeflow FAQ

How much does Kubeflow cost?

Kubeflow is open source and the site publishes no pricing plans. Your costs are the infrastructure you run it on, or the fees of a vendor distribution.

Is Kubeflow open source?

Yes. It is built by a community of contributors, hosted on GitHub, and described as a CNCF graduated project.

Is there a free plan for Kubeflow?

There are no plans or tiers. The software is free to install, and you provide the Kubernetes cluster.

Do I need to install the whole Kubeflow platform?

No. Projects such as Pipelines, Trainer, Katib and Spark Operator can be deployed on their own, or you can install the full AI reference platform.

Does Kubeflow have an SDK or API?

Yes. The Kubeflow SDK provides unified Python APIs across subprojects, and Pipelines has its own Python SDK for authoring workflows.

What are alternatives to Kubeflow?

Alternatives include MLflow, Metaflow, ZenML, Apache Airflow, Argo Workflows and Ray.
