Argilla

Open-source data curation platform where AI engineers and domain experts collect human and AI feedback to improve LLM datasets.

Open source

What is Argilla?

Argilla is a free, open-source collaboration tool that helps AI engineers and domain experts build and maintain high-quality datasets for language models. It holds your training data and model outputs, lets you assess model quality, and refines the data through feedback from both people and AI. Text and images are supported out of the box, and custom fields can represent audio, video or other content rendered as HTML. Argilla 2.x is the current line, and the older 1.x releases reached end-of-life in June 2025. It is built from a Python SDK, a FastAPI server, a relational database, a vector database on Elasticsearch or OpenSearch, and a Vue.js interface that ships in the same Docker image. It works alongside Hugging Face Transformers and spaCy, and deploys on Hugging Face Spaces or your own infrastructure. Argilla does not train models or generate synthetic data itself, since its companion library distilabel covers that. There is no pricing to pay for the software.

Use cases

  • Collect human feedback on LLM outputs
  • Label text data for fine-tuning
  • Review and evaluate model responses
  • Curate datasets for RAG evaluation
  • Assign annotation records to a team
  • Monitor model predictions and collect more data
  • Combine human and AI feedback on datasets

Who it's for

  • AI engineers
  • NLP practitioners
  • Data scientists
  • Domain experts

Why use Argilla

  • It is free and open source, so you keep full ownership of your data.
  • Domain experts and engineers work in one interface, which speeds up feedback loops.
  • It integrates with common NLP libraries, so it fits an existing MLOps stack.
  • You can start with a single use case and expand later instead of committing to an all-in-one suite.
  • Hugging Face Spaces deployment gets a team started without managing servers.

Argilla features

  • Annotation interface for text and images
  • Custom fields for audio, video and HTML content
  • Python SDK installable with pip
  • FastAPI server with a REST API
  • Vector search on Elasticsearch or OpenSearch
  • Human and AI feedback on datasets
  • Record assignment across a team
  • Metadata and filtering to query datasets
  • Deployment on Hugging Face Spaces or Docker
  • Compatibility with Hugging Face and spaCy

Argilla integrations

  • Hugging Face
  • spaCy
  • distilabel
  • Elasticsearch
  • OpenSearch
  • PostgreSQL
  • LangChain
  • LlamaIndex

How to get started with Argilla

  1. Deploy Argilla on Hugging Face Spaces or with Docker on your own infrastructure.
  2. Install the Python SDK and define a dataset with the fields and questions reviewers will answer.
  3. Log records and, optionally, model suggestions to the dataset.
  4. Assign records to annotators and collect their responses in the web interface.
  5. Export the curated data and use it to fine-tune or evaluate a model with your framework of choice.

Argilla limitations

  • You host and operate Argilla yourself, on Hugging Face Spaces or your own servers
  • It does not train models or generate synthetic data
  • It does not provide an in-house annotation workforce
  • The 1.x line has reached end-of-life

Argilla pricing

Argilla is open source, so you can use and self-host it for free.

Prices can change and may vary by country or exclude tax. Check the official pricing page.

Argilla FAQ

How much does Argilla cost?

Nothing. Argilla is open source and free to use. You can deploy it on Hugging Face Spaces or your own infrastructure.

Is there a free plan for Argilla?

The software itself is free with no paid plans listed, so you only pay for the infrastructure you run it on.

Is Argilla open source?

Yes. It describes itself as free, open source and compatible with major NLP libraries.

Does Argilla have an API?

Yes. It has a Python SDK and a FastAPI server that exposes a REST API to the SDK and the web interface.

Which data types does Argilla support?

Text and images, plus custom fields that can show audio, video or other content converted to base64 or rendered as HTML.

Does Argilla generate synthetic data or train models?

No. For synthetic data it points to the distilabel library, and for training you use any framework you like, with Hugging Face Transformers recommended.

What are alternatives to Argilla?

Label Studio, Prodigy, Snorkel, Scale and Lilac are alternatives for data annotation and curation.
