Usage HUD

Free Mac menu-bar app that shows usage and reset times for Claude, Codex, Gemini, Grok and Ollama and which plan has room.

What is Usage HUD?

Usage HUD is a macOS menu-bar app for people who split work across several AI coding plans. It reads usage for Claude, Codex, Gemini, Grok and local Ollama models and answers with one verdict, GO, WATCH or STOP, for the plan you are on, naming another plan with room when the current one runs hot. Each lane shows when it would run out at the current pace and when it resets, with an optional reset reminder. Every number carries a label saying whether it is official, measured, estimated or unknown. It also reports the API-equivalent value of your usage, which the vendor stresses is not a bill. A read-only terminal tool and an MCP server come with it, so agents can ask which plan has room. It needs macOS 14 or later, has no account, and keeps numbers on your Mac. It is free, with an optional tip.

Use cases

  • Check which AI plan has room
  • Track Claude and Codex limits
  • Plan around reset times
  • Count Ollama tokens locally
  • Let agents check usage before long work

Why use Usage HUD

  • One verdict replaces checking several dashboards when you are deep in a build.
  • Labels tell you whether a figure is official, measured or estimated, so stale data is visible.
  • Your numbers stay on your Mac unless you opt in to the public badge.
  • Agents can query it through the MCP server before starting long tasks.
