Source Trace

VS Code extension and team dashboard that measure how much code your AI coding tools write, how much survives to commit, and which models earn their cost.

What is Source Trace?

Source Trace is a tool for engineering teams that run several AI coding assistants and want evidence of what they deliver. A VS Code extension tags each line of code on the developer's own machine by the agent and model that wrote it, including terminal agents such as Claude, then records which lines survive into a commit and which are discarded first. A shared dashboard turns that into adoption by team and repository, survival and rework rates, and per-model comparisons, so you can judge which subscriptions are worth renewing. An AI Git Blame view shows which code was machine-generated and which model version wrote it, and attribution can be stored in your Git repository in an open format. The vendor says source code and commit messages never leave the machine; only counts, file paths and hashed identifiers are sent. Setup means installing the extension and signing in with Google or GitHub. The Personal plan is free on all your devices, and team plan details are still being published.

Use cases

  • Measure AI-generated code share
  • Compare coding models and agents
  • Track AI adoption by team
  • Audit rework on AI output
  • Attribute lines with AI Git Blame
  • Review AI tool spend before renewal

Who it's for

  • Engineering leaders
  • Developers
  • Engineering managers
  • Small dev teams

Why use Source Trace

  • You see how much AI-written code is kept instead of only how many tokens were spent.
  • Comparing survival and rework by model gives you data from your own codebase before a renewal decision.
  • The extension needs no agents, proxies or workflow changes, so a team can start within minutes.
  • Source code stays on developer machines, and repository names can be hidden.
  • AI Git Blame keeps a record of which model version wrote a line long after the commit.

Source Trace features

  • VS Code extension with zero configuration
  • Per-line attribution by agent and model
  • Survival and rework rates before commit
  • Team dashboard with adoption funnel
  • ROI comparison by model and language
  • AI Git Blame stored in Git notes
  • Tracking of local scripts and uncommitted experiments
  • Coverage metric showing instrumented commits
  • Obfuscated repository names
  • Support for CLI-first agents

Source Trace integrations

  • VS Code
  • GitHub
  • Google
  • Git
  • Claude
  • Codex
  • Kilo Code
  • Copilot
  • Cursor

How to get started with Source Trace

  1. Install the Source Trace extension in VS Code and sign in with Google or GitHub.
  2. Work as usual while the extension tags changes locally by agent and model.
  3. At commit time it records which AI lines survived and which were discarded.
  4. Metadata such as line counts and hashed identifiers syncs to the shared dashboard.
  5. Review adoption, rework and per-model ROI, and check the coverage metric to confirm the data is trustworthy.

Source Trace limitations

  • Attribution requires the VS Code extension to be installed and signed in
  • Large automated formatting changes after an agent edit can blur attribution
  • Only the Personal plan is described publicly; team plan details are not yet published
  • Metrics are not meant for ranking individual developers

  1. Blackbox AI

Inference platform with one OpenAI-compatible endpoint for 300+ open and closed models, encrypted connections, and dedicated enterprise deployments.

  2. BurnRate

AI cost analytics that combines OpenAI and Anthropic spend in one dashboard, with budgets and a local CLI for coding-tool sessions.

  3. CloudByte AI

Observability dashboard for teams using AI coding tools, tracking sessions, token spend, commits, security and DORA metrics.

  4. Headroom

Open-source context compression for LLM apps and coding agents that trims tool output, logs, files and RAG results before the model reads them.

  5. LeanCTX

Open-source context gateway that trims what AI coding tools read, caches repeat reads and logs what each agent was given.

  6. Tuning Engines

Control plane that credentials, governs and tracks software AI agents and robots, with an OpenAI-compatible gateway.

Source Trace FAQ

How much does Source Trace cost?

The Personal plan is listed as free across all your devices. The site does not publish a price for team plans yet, and says no credit card is needed to start.

Does Source Trace upload my source code?

No. The vendor states source code, file contents and commit messages stay on your machine. Line counts, file paths, hashed identifiers and model names are collected.

Which AI coding tools does it work with?

It tracks edits from you, other extensions and terminal agents such as Claude, and the site shows support for Codex, VS Code and Kilo Code, with more coming.

What is AI Git Blame?

AI Git Blame shows which lines were generated by AI and which model version wrote them, with the attribution stored in your Git repository in an open format.

Who is Source Trace for?

It is aimed at engineering leaders and teams that use several AI coding tools and want evidence of adoption, code kept and rework.

What are alternatives to Source Trace?
