What is MiMo Code?

MiMo Code is an AI coding agent from the Xiaomi MiMo project. It reads your codebase, plans changes, edits files and runs commands, and offers one consistent workflow across the terminal, a desktop app and IDE extensions. Three built-in modes cover different jobs: build has full tool access, plan is read-only for analysis, and compose follows a workflow of 13 bundled skills covering test-driven development, debugging, planning, code review and git worktrees. You can connect any of 75+ LLM providers through the AI SDK and Models.dev, run local models, or use the MiMo Platform, which is OpenAI-compatible and offers the flagship mimo-v2.5-pro model. Rules, skills, commands and custom agents with their own prompts, models and tools let teams tailor it. The CLI is open source under an MIT license, and the MiMo-V2.5 model weights are published on Hugging Face. MiMo Code itself has no listed price; you pay your chosen model provider, and MiMo Platform usage is billed through Token Plans.

Use cases

  • Understand an unfamiliar repository
  • Plan and build features with Plan mode
  • Review diffs and run checks before merging
  • Debug problems and verify fixes
  • Run test-driven development workflows
  • Work with local or self-chosen models
  • Delegate tasks to specialized agents

Who it's for

  • Software developers
  • Engineering teams
  • Open-source contributors

Why use MiMo Code

  • Pick from 75+ model providers or run local models, so you are not tied to one vendor.
  • Plan mode lets the agent analyze code and draft a plan without changing any files.
  • Compose mode guides work through brainstorming, planning, test-driven execution, verification and review.
  • The same agent runs in the terminal, desktop app and IDE extensions, so habits carry across tools.
  • Custom agents, rules and skills let a team encode how it likes to work.

How to get started with MiMo Code

  1. Install MiMo Code and open it in your project from the terminal.
  2. Run /connect, choose a provider such as Xiaomi MiMo, and paste your API key.
  3. Pick a model with /models, or set a default in mimocode.json.
  4. Ask it to explore the repo, switch to Plan mode for read-only analysis, then use Build mode to make changes.
  5. Review the diffs and checks, and use Compose mode when you want a full plan-and-verify workflow.

MiMo Code limitations

  • Documentation is partly in Chinese
  • Plan mode disables write, edit, patch and bash tools by design
