What is Amp?

Amp is an AI coding agent you can run in two ways: in orbs, which are hosted machines where an agent keeps working while your laptop is closed, or locally through a command-line tool. Orbs come in sizes from one CPU and 2 GB of memory up to 16 CPUs, and each includes 60 GB of disk. Orbs pause after the agent has been idle for five minutes and you have been away for twenty, and you are billed by the minute only while they run. Teams get shared threads, multiplayer sessions, shared portals, plugins and skills, plus SSO. You can bring your own ChatGPT or Claude subscription or API keys, with no Amp token fee on top. Pricing starts with a free Hobby tier that pays as you go for hosted orbs, then Individual at $20 per month with 45,000 orb minutes. Teams has no extra charge, and Enterprise is custom, adding SCIM sync, audit logs and IP allowlisting. Students and teachers can get Individual for $10 per month.

Use cases

  • Delegate coding tasks to a cloud agent
  • Run parallel agents in separate orbs
  • Monitor a rollout with a scheduled agent
  • Share agent threads with teammates
  • Run coding agents on your own machine from the CLI
  • Bring your own ChatGPT or Claude subscription
  • Control agent spend with pooled team credits

Who it's for

  • Software engineers
  • Engineering teams
  • Platform teams

Why use Amp

  • Orbs let agents keep working on remote machines, so a task does not depend on your laptop staying open.
  • A free Hobby tier plus unlimited self-hosted orbs means you can try the product without a subscription.
  • Linking an existing ChatGPT or Claude subscription avoids paying twice for model tokens.
  • Per-minute orb billing with automatic pausing keeps idle environments from running up cost.
  • Teams can share threads and portals and pool credits on one bill.
