re_gent

Open-source version control for AI coding agents that records each step and shows which prompt wrote each line of code.

Open source

What is re_gent?

re_gent, also written Regent, is an open-source command-line tool that adds an audit trail for AI coding agents. After you run rgt init in a project, it hooks into Claude Code, OpenAI Codex CLI and OpenCode and records every tool-using turn as a Step stored in a .regent folder, much like git stores history. Commands such as rgt log, rgt show and rgt blame let you see what a session did, inspect the conversation behind a change and trace a line back to the prompt that produced it. Sessions are tracked separately, and history survives /compact and /clear. An optional VS Code extension shows inline blame annotations. It is released under the Apache License 2.0 and is meant to complement git, not replace it. Cursor, Cline and Continue are listed as planned.

Use cases

  • Audit what an AI agent changed
  • Trace a line to its originating prompt
  • Debug a bad AI refactor
  • Track concurrent agent sessions
  • Inspect conversation behind a code change

Who it's for

  • Software developers
  • Engineering leads
  • Open-source contributors

Why use re_gent

  • You can answer why a file changed by reading the prompt and conversation behind it.
  • Hooks configure themselves on init, so no manual setup is needed.
  • Separate session refs keep concurrent agents from blurring together.
  • It is open source under Apache 2.0 and free to use.
  • History persists after context is compacted or cleared in the agent.

re_gent features

  • Automatic capture of every agent turn
  • rgt log for step history
  • rgt blame to find the prompt behind a line
  • rgt show for full step context
  • Per-session history that survives /compact and /clear
  • Content-addressed storage with BLAKE3 hashing
  • SQLite index for fast queries
  • VS Code extension with inline blame
  • .regentignore support

re_gent integrations

  • Claude Code
  • OpenAI Codex CLI
  • OpenCode
  • VS Code

How to get started with re_gent

  1. Install with Homebrew or go install, or build from source.
  2. Run rgt init in your project so hooks are set up for your agent.
  3. Work with Claude Code, Codex CLI or OpenCode as usual while steps are recorded.
  4. Use rgt log to review activity and rgt show to open a step.
  5. Run rgt blame on a file and line to see the prompt that wrote it.

re_gent limitations

  • Cursor, Cline and Continue are listed as planned, not supported
  • Non-destructive rewind and fork operations are on the roadmap
  • Works alongside git and does not replace it
