Lacy Shell
Free MIT-licensed ZSH and Bash plugin that runs shell commands normally and sends plain-English questions to the AI CLI you choose.
What is Lacy Shell?
Lacy Shell is a plugin for ZSH and Bash 4+ that adds natural-language input to the terminal prompt without replacing your shell. When you press Enter, it decides whether the line is a shell command or a request: commands run locally as usual, and natural language is passed to an AI command-line tool you have configured, such as lash, Claude Code, OpenCode, Gemini CLI, Codex CLI, Hermes or a custom command. A colored indicator shows the routing as you type, and a six-rule classifier plus a fallback reroute catch commands that fail because they were really questions. Lacy passes your working directory, git branch, last exit code and recent commands as context. Ctrl+Space switches between auto, shell-only and agent-only modes. It is free, MIT licensed and has no telemetry, with no accounts or API keys of its own because each AI CLI handles its own sign-in.
Use cases
- Ask AI questions from the shell prompt
- Route prompts to Claude Code or Gemini CLI
- Debug a failed build by describing it
- Use AI over SSH on a remote server
- Switch between shell and agent modes
- Run local models for offline AI help
Who it's for
Why use Lacy Shell
- You keep your existing shell, aliases and config, because Lacy only routes input.
- There is no prefix or mode switch, so asking a question costs the same effort as typing a command.
- You pick the AI backend, including a fully local one through Hermes.
- It works over SSH and in any terminal where ZSH or Bash runs.
- The plugin is small, free and open source, with no telemetry.

Lacy Shell FAQ
How much does Lacy Shell cost?
Lacy Shell is free and MIT licensed. The AI CLI you route to may have its own pricing or API costs, since Lacy has no AI backend of its own.
Is there a free plan for Lacy Shell?
There are no plans or tiers. The plugin is free to install, and you only pay for any AI service your chosen CLI uses.
Is Lacy Shell open source?
Yes. The site states it is MIT licensed and open source, with no telemetry.
Which AI tools does Lacy Shell work with?
It supports lash, Claude Code, OpenCode, Gemini CLI, Codex CLI and Hermes out of the box, plus any custom command that accepts a query argument.
