Edera

Container runtime that gives each Kubernetes pod its own microVM, for isolating untrusted code, GPUs and AI agents.

What is Edera?

Edera is a container runtime that gives every Kubernetes pod its own lightweight virtual machine, called a zone, with a dedicated Linux kernel, so a container escape cannot reach other workloads or the host. It installs into a cluster as a standard Kubernetes RuntimeClass, runs existing container images unchanged, and the vendor says performance stays within about 5% of native. Edera targets multi-tenant isolation, untrusted code execution, GPU workloads and sandboxing for AI agents. Release 1.11 added support for booting full VM images in raw disk, QCOW2 and AMI formats alongside container zones. Edera also offers EderaON, a free single-node license valid for 90 days for trying the runtime on your own infrastructure. Pricing for production use is not published, so teams contact the company.

Use cases

  • Sandbox AI agents on shared infrastructure
  • Isolate tenants in multi-tenant clusters
  • Run untrusted code in containers safely
  • Isolate GPU workloads
  • Run VM images next to containers
  • Evaluate hardened container runtimes on one node

Who it's for

  • Platform engineers
  • Security teams
  • GPU cloud providers
  • Kubernetes operators

Why use Edera

  • A separate kernel per pod removes the shared-kernel risk that standard containers carry.
  • No changes to nodes, control plane or application images keeps adoption light.
  • AI agents and untrusted workloads can run on shared hardware with a hardware-level boundary.
  • VM-based workloads can be brought under the same model without containerizing them first.

Edera features

  • Each pod boots into its own microVM zone with a dedicated Linux kernel
  • Installs as a Kubernetes RuntimeClass with no control-plane or app changes
  • Runs existing container images as they are
  • Zones schedule, autoscale and report metrics like normal pods
  • Boots VM images in raw disk, QCOW2 and AMI formats
  • Honors Kubernetes security policy inside zones
  • Hypervisor derived from Xen with most components written in Rust
  • Free single-node EderaON license for evaluation

Edera integrations

  • Kubernetes
  • Amazon EKS
  • Azure Linux
  • Linode

How to get started with Edera

  1. Install Edera on your nodes, using the documented EKS or Linode guides or the EderaON installer.
  2. Create a RuntimeClass that points to Edera in your Kubernetes cluster.
  3. Set that RuntimeClass on the workloads you want to isolate.
  4. Each pod starts in its own zone with a dedicated kernel and runs as usual.
  5. Monitor and scale pods with your existing Kubernetes tools.

Edera limitations

  • Pods that use hostNetwork: true are not supported with the Edera RuntimeClass
  • Initial image pulls can be slower because Edera uses its own pull implementation
  • EderaON requires UEFI boot and currently uses the Xen backend; KVM is not yet available there
  • EderaON licenses last 90 days and cover one node, with community support through GitHub Issues

  1. Agents CLI

Google's command-line tool and skill set that lets coding agents scaffold, evaluate and deploy ADK agents on Google Cloud.

  2. Agno

Python framework and AgentOS runtime for building agents, teams and workflows, then serving them as an API with a control plane.

  3. AI SDK

Free open-source TypeScript toolkit for building AI-powered apps and agents with one API across OpenAI, Anthropic, Google and more.

  4. Arize AX

Observability and evaluation platform for AI agents and LLM apps, with tracing, issue detection and experiments on a free plan.

  5. IronCurtain

Open-source runtime that limits what AI agents can do, using security policy compiled from a plain-English constitution.

  6. SmolVM

Open-source secure, persistent computer for AI agents, used as a sandbox for browser agents and computer-use tasks.

Edera FAQ

How much does Edera cost?

Edera does not publish prices for its production platform. Reach out through the contact form. A free single-node evaluation license called EderaON is available.

Is there a free plan for Edera?

EderaON is a free one-node license valid for 90 days. It includes the Edera runtime, access to Edera images and community support through GitHub Issues.

Which environments does Edera support?

The docs list Kubernetes 1.33 to 1.36, Amazon EKS on Amazon Linux 2023, Azure Linux 2 and 3, Linode Kubernetes, and Linux kernel 4.x or newer. EderaON runs on UEFI bare metal or VMs, including AWS, Google Cloud and Azure.

Does Edera need nested virtualization?

No. Edera uses paravirtualization based on Xen, so it can isolate workloads without hardware virtualization, and uses hardware support when it is available.

What are alternatives to Edera?

Related sandboxing runtimes include gVisor, Kata Containers and Firecracker. On Debuly, compare IronCurtain, SmolVM and Agents CLI.
