Baseten

Inference platform for deploying open-source, custom and fine-tuned AI models, with per-token Model APIs and dedicated GPUs.

What is Baseten?

Baseten is a model inference platform for engineering teams that want to run AI models in production without operating their own GPU serving stack. You can call pre-optimized Model APIs that bill per million input and output tokens, with discounted cached input, or deploy your own open-source, fine-tuned or custom models on dedicated compute, packaged with the open-source Truss standard. A training product runs jobs on on-demand GPUs such as L4, A10G, A100, H100 and B200. Deployments autoscale, you only pay while a model is deploying, scaling or predicting rather than for idle time, and usage is visible in a billing dashboard, CLI and REST API. The company states SOC 2 Type II and HIPAA compliance. There are three tiers: Basic is pay-as-you-go, Pro adds monthly invoicing, priority GPUs and higher rate limits, and Enterprise adds custom SLAs, self-hosting and data residency control. New accounts receive credits to experiment for free.

Use cases

  • Serve fine-tuned LLMs in production
  • Call hosted open models through an API
  • Deploy custom models with Truss
  • Run training jobs on GPUs
  • Self-host inference in your own cloud
  • Track token and GPU spend

Who it's for

  • ML engineers
  • Backend developers
  • AI product teams

Why use Baseten

  • You skip the work of running GPUs, autoscaling and model serving yourself.
  • Billing follows active compute time, so idle replicas are not charged.
  • Model APIs let you test open models per token before committing to a dedicated deployment.
  • Pro and Enterprise tiers allow negotiated compute discounts and self-hosting for existing cloud commitments.
  • Usage can be broken down by API key, user, model or service tier for cost tracking.

Baseten features

  • Dedicated deployments for custom and open-source models
  • Model APIs billed per million tokens
  • Automatic cached-input discount with session affinity routing
  • Training on on-demand GPUs
  • GPU choices from L4 and A10G to H100 and B200
  • Autoscaling with no charge for idle time
  • Truss open-source model packaging
  • SOC 2 Type II and HIPAA compliance
  • Billing dashboard, CLI and REST usage API
  • Self-hosting and custom regions on Enterprise

How to get started with Baseten

  1. Sign up and use the free credits to explore the dashboard and test deployments.
  2. Choose a Model API for quick access or deploy a model from the library or your own with Truss.
  3. Select GPUs and autoscaling behavior for a dedicated deployment.
  4. Call the endpoint from your app, optionally sending a session ID for better cache reuse.
  5. Monitor usage and set a workspace budget from the billing and usage dashboard.

Baseten limitations

  • Default Model API limits are 15 RPM and 100,000 TPM for unverified Basic accounts
  • Priority GPU access and Slack support require Pro or Enterprise
  • Self-hosting and custom SLAs are Enterprise only
  • Aimed at engineering teams, not non-technical users

Baseten FAQ

How much does Baseten cost?

Model APIs bill per million input and output tokens at rates that vary by model, and dedicated GPUs bill for the time a model uses compute. Basic is pay-as-you-go, with Pro invoiced monthly.

Is there a free plan?

There is no separate free tier listed, but new accounts come with credits so you can experiment with deployments and the interface for free.

What plans does Baseten have?

Basic, Pro and Enterprise. Pro adds priority GPU access, dedicated compute and higher rate limits, and Enterprise adds custom SLAs, self-hosting and data residency control.

Do I pay for idle time on Baseten?

No. You pay only for the time a model is deploying, scaling up or down, or serving predictions, and you control how it scales.

Does Baseten have an API?

Yes. Model APIs use an OpenAI-style chat completions endpoint, and a Management API and CLI expose billing and usage data.

Can I run Baseten in my own cloud?

Yes. You can self-host Baseten to manage security and use existing cloud commitments, which is part of the Enterprise tier.

What are alternatives to Baseten?

Common alternatives for hosted model inference are Together AI, Fireworks AI, Replicate, Modal and BentoML.
