What is n8n?

n8n is a workflow automation platform where you connect apps and services in a visual editor and add code or AI steps when a task needs them. Workflows can be started by webhooks, queues or schedules, call custom HTTP and GraphQL APIs, run JavaScript or Python in code steps, and use AI nodes, an AI Agent node, an MCP Server Trigger and an MCP Client. You can run it as n8n Cloud, where n8n hosts it, or self-host it: a Community Edition is available on GitHub, and Business and Enterprise plans add features such as SSO, Git-based version control, environments and queue mode. Every plan includes unlimited users and workflows and all integrations, and pricing is based on the number of monthly workflow executions, where one execution is a full run regardless of its steps. Published prices are Starter at 20€ per month, Pro at 50€ per month, both billed annually, Business at 667€ per month for self-hosting, and a custom Enterprise plan.

  • Automate workflows between apps
  • Build AI agents with tool calls

Why use n8n

  • Billing counts whole workflow runs, so adding steps or users does not raise the price.
  • You can start on n8n Cloud or run the Community Edition yourself and keep control of your data.
  • Code steps and custom API calls cover cases where a ready-made node does not exist.
  • Agent, MCP and evaluation features let you build and test AI workflows in the same tool.
  • Higher tiers add governance such as SSO, audit logging, log streaming and extended data retention.

How to get started with n8n

  1. Choose n8n Cloud, or install the self-hosted Community Edition from GitHub.
  2. Create a workflow in the editor, starting from a template or a trigger such as a webhook, queue or schedule.
  3. Add nodes for the apps you use, and drop in code steps or AI Agent nodes where logic is needed.
  4. Activate the workflow and monitor runs through execution logs, retries and insights.

n8n limitations

  • Cloud plans have fixed concurrency and cannot be adjusted
  • Custom nodes and bash scripts are available only when self-hosted
  • The Business plan is self-hosted only and is not offered on Cloud
