Marvin
Open source Python framework from Prefect for getting structured output from LLMs and building agent workflows from tasks and threads.
What is Marvin?
Marvin is a Python framework for creating AI applications on top of large language models. It takes care of the state, conversation history and agent coordination that usually clutter LLM code, and exposes a small API. The fastest path is marvin.run(), which runs a task from a plain instruction and can return typed results through Pydantic models. Helper functions cast, classify, extract, generate, summarize and say cover common data chores. For larger jobs you define Tasks, assign specialized Agents with their own instructions, tools and models, group related work in Threads that keep conversation history, and add persistent Memory so agents remember across conversations. Marvin can also connect agents to MCP servers. It installs with pip or uv, needs Python 3.10 or higher, uses OpenAI by default and works with any model supported by Pydantic AI. Marvin is maintained under PrefectHQ on GitHub and licensed under Apache-2.0, so there is no fee beyond what your model provider charges.
Use cases
- Extract structured data from text
- Classify text into categories
- Cast text to typed Python values
- Build multi-agent workflows
- Give agents persistent memory
- Connect agents to MCP servers
Who it's for
Why use Marvin
- Small functions turn common LLM chores like classify and extract into one-line calls.
- Pydantic result types give you validated, typed output instead of free text.
- Tasks, agents and threads make multi-step flows easier to follow than ad hoc prompts.
- Model flexibility through Pydantic AI means you are not tied to one provider.
- Open source licensing lets you use and adapt it in your own projects.
Marvin features
- marvin.run() for one-line tasks
- Cast, classify, extract, generate, summarize and say functions
- Structured results through Pydantic models
- Agents with their own instructions, tools and models
- Tasks with custom tool functions
- Threads for shared conversation history
- Persistent memory modules
- MCP server support
- Any model supported by Pydantic AI
- Interactive CLI mode
Marvin integrations
How to get started with Marvin
- Install the marvin package with pip or uv and set your LLM provider API key.
- Call marvin.run() or a helper such as classify or extract with your instruction and input.
- Pass a result_type, such as a Pydantic model, to get structured output.
- Create Agents with instructions and tools for specialized work, and assign them to Tasks.
- Group tasks in a Thread to share context across a multi-step workflow.
Marvin limitations
- Python only, and it needs Python 3.10 or higher
- Needs an API key from an LLM provider, with OpenAI used by default
- Model usage is billed by your provider rather than by Marvin
Marvin pricing
Marvin is open source, so you can use and self-host it for free.
Prices can change and may vary by country or exclude tax. Check the official pricing page.

Marvin FAQ
Is Marvin free?
Yes. Marvin is open source under Apache-2.0 and has no plans or pricing of its own. You pay your model provider, such as OpenAI, for the API usage.
Which models does Marvin use?
It uses OpenAI models by default and supports any model compatible with Pydantic AI, which you can set per agent with a string like openai:gpt-4o.
How do I install Marvin?
Run pip install marvin or uv add marvin. It requires Python 3.10 or higher and an API key from an LLM provider.
Does Marvin support structured output?
Yes. Pass a result_type such as list[int] or a Pydantic model to marvin.run() or a task, and the result comes back in that format.
Can Marvin use MCP servers or custom tools?
Yes. Agents and tasks accept Python functions as tools, and a guide covers connecting agents to Model Context Protocol servers.
What are alternatives to Marvin?
Instructor, Pydantic AI, BAML, Outlines and LangChain also help with structured LLM output or agent workflows.
