Magenta

Google's open source research project on machine learning for music and art, with plugins, models and Python and JavaScript code.

Open source

What is Magenta?

Magenta is a Google Brain research project that asks whether machine learning can help people make music and art, and it releases its models and tools as open source on GitHub. The most approachable part is Magenta Studio, a set of five apps (Generate, Continue, Interpolate, Groove and Drumify) that work as Ableton Live plugins or as standalone desktop apps and read and write MIDI. Developers can run models such as MusicVAE, Music Transformer, GANSynth, DDSP and Onsets and Frames from free Colab notebooks, or use the Magenta.js package to run models in a web browser. The site also lists the DDSP-VST plugin and a RealTime section for live music models. Magenta targets musicians, producers, coders and machine learning researchers who want to experiment with generative music. Because the code is open source there is no price or paid plan; the Colab notebooks run on a hosted Google Cloud instance at no cost.

Use cases

  • Generate melodies and drum patterns
  • Humanize drum timing and velocity
  • Transcribe audio to MIDI notes
  • Convert a voice into an instrument
  • Experiment with music ML research code
  • Add AI MIDI tools to Ableton Live

Who it's for

  • Musicians and producers
  • Developers
  • ML researchers
  • Digital artists

Why use Magenta

  • The code and datasets are open, so you can read, run and modify the models yourself.
  • Magenta Studio brings the models into a DAW, so producers do not need to write code.
  • Free Colab notebooks let you try models without owning a GPU.
  • Magenta.js runs models in a browser, including on mobile devices, which lowers the setup barrier.

Magenta features

  • Magenta Studio: Generate, Continue, Interpolate, Groove and Drumify
  • Ableton Live plugins that read and write MIDI clips
  • Standalone Magenta Studio apps that use MIDI files
  • Magenta.js models that run in the browser
  • Colab notebooks for DDSP, MusicVAE, GANSynth and more
  • Piano and multi-instrument audio transcription models
  • DDSP-VST plugin and NSynth MaxForLive device
  • Open source TensorFlow code and datasets on GitHub

Magenta integrations

  • Ableton Live
  • Max for Live
  • TensorFlow
  • TensorFlow.js
  • Google Colab
  • GitHub

How to get started with Magenta

  1. Open magenta.tensorflow.org and pick a project such as Magenta Studio, a Colab demo or a native app.
  2. For Studio, download the Ableton Live plugins or the standalone apps and choose a MIDI clip or file as input.
  3. Run Generate, Continue, Interpolate, Groove or Drumify to produce new MIDI, then drag the result back into your project.
  4. For research work, open a Colab notebook or clone the GitHub repository and run the model on your own audio or MIDI.

Magenta limitations

  • Research-oriented tools that expect some technical comfort
  • Native apps need extra software installed on your machine
  • Colab notebooks run on hosted Google Cloud instances you do not control

Magenta pricing

Magenta is open source, so you can use and self-host it for free.

Magenta FAQ

How much does Magenta cost?

Magenta has no published price. The code and models are open source, and the Colab notebooks run on a hosted Google Cloud instance for free.

Is Magenta open source?

Yes. The team releases its TensorFlow implementations, models and some datasets in its GitHub repository so others can replicate and build on the work.

What is Magenta Studio?

Magenta Studio is a collection of five music tools (Generate, Continue, Interpolate, Groove and Drumify) available as Ableton Live plugins and as standalone apps that use MIDI files.

Do I need Ableton Live to use Magenta?

No. Magenta Studio can be downloaded as standalone native apps, and you can use MIDI files from your desktop instead of Ableton clips.

Can I use Magenta in a web browser?

Yes. Magenta.js ports the models to TensorFlow.js so they run in a browser, and the Colab demos need no local setup.

What are alternatives to Magenta?

Open and hosted generative audio options include Stable Audio, Meta AudioCraft, RAVE, Suno and Udio, which differ in how much code access they give you.
