LightAgent

Compact open-source Python framework for building agents with tools, memory, MCP, tracing, guardrails and multi-step workflows.

Open source

What is LightAgent?

LightAgent is an open-source Python framework for developers who want to build AI agents without a heavy stack. It avoids LangChain and LlamaIndex, runs against OpenAI-compatible endpoints including OpenAI, DeepSeek, Qwen, OpenRouter, vLLM and llama.cpp, and returns OpenAI-style streaming output so it can sit behind a chat interface. Install it with pip, create an agent with a model, key and base URL, and call run. On top of that core it provides custom tools and MCP tool servers, per-user long-term memory through the mem0 module, a Tree of Thought module for task decomposition, LightSwarm for delegating between agents, and LightFlow for deterministic multi-step workflows with retries, checkpoints and approval nodes. Optional tracing, an evaluation harness, guardrails and human-approval hooks help with production use. The project is free, and the repository lists releases up to v0.11.0.

Use cases

  • Build a tool-calling agent in Python
  • Give agents memory per user
  • Coordinate several agents with a swarm
  • Chain agents into deterministic workflows
  • Connect agents to MCP tool servers
  • Require human approval for risky tool calls
  • Trace and evaluate agent behavior

Who it's for

  • Python developers
  • AI engineers
  • Small product teams
  • Researchers

Why use LightAgent

  • The core stays small and does not depend on LangChain or LlamaIndex, so there is less to learn.
  • Any OpenAI-compatible provider or local server can be used, which keeps model choice open.
  • Production controls such as tracing, guardrails, approvals and evaluation can be added step by step.
  • OpenAI-style streaming output lets it drop in behind existing chat front ends.
  • It is free and open source, with release notes and docs published in the repository.

LightAgent features

  • Agent class with OpenAI-compatible streaming output
  • Custom Python tools and MCP over stdio and SSE
  • Per-user long-term memory with the mem0 module
  • Tree of Thought module with reflection
  • LightSwarm for intent recognition and delegation
  • LightFlow workflows with retries, checkpoints and resume
  • Opt-in tracing with exportable run events
  • LightEvaluator for deterministic regression cases
  • Input, tool and output guardrail templates
  • Human approval hook for high-impact tools

LightAgent integrations

  • OpenAI
  • OpenRouter
  • DeepSeek
  • Qwen
  • vLLM
  • llama.cpp
  • Mem0
  • MCP

How to get started with LightAgent

  1. Install the package with pip install lightagent, and optionally mem0ai for memory.
  2. Create a LightAgent with your model name, API key and base URL for an OpenAI-compatible endpoint.
  3. Register Python tools or MCP servers and call agent.run with a query, adding a user ID for memory.
  4. Turn on tracing, guardrails or approval hooks, and chain agents with LightSwarm or LightFlow as needs grow.

LightAgent limitations

  • Targets OpenAI-compatible model APIs
  • Requires writing Python code
  • Arbitrary Python execution tools are not registered by default
  • SharedMemoryPool is described as a prototype

LightAgent pricing

LightAgent is open source, so you can use and self-host it for free.

  1. AutoGen

Microsoft's MIT-licensed Python and .NET framework for multi-agent AI apps, now archived; new projects are pointed to Microsoft Agent Framework.

  2. CrewAI

Multi-agent framework and platform for building AI agent crews in Python or a visual editor, then deploying and monitoring them.

  3. LangGraph

Low-level open-source orchestration framework and runtime for building stateful, long-running AI agents as graphs.

  4. LlamaIndex

Open-source framework plus the LlamaParse platform for parsing, extracting and indexing documents so LLM apps can use them.

  5. OpenAI Agents SDK

Open-source Python framework for building multi-agent workflows with tools, handoffs, guardrails, tracing, sandboxes and voice agents.

  6. smolagents

Hugging Face's minimal open-source Python library for building agents that write their actions as code.

LightAgent FAQ

How much does LightAgent cost?

LightAgent is free and open source. You pay only for the model API or hosting you connect it to.

Is there a free plan for LightAgent?
