CubeSandbox

Self-hosted MicroVM sandbox service for AI agents, with fast starts, hardware isolation and E2B SDK compatibility.

Open source

What is CubeSandbox?

CubeSandbox is an infrastructure service for running AI agents and the code they generate inside hardware-isolated MicroVMs. It is built on RustVMM and KVM, and each sandbox gets its own guest kernel, so LLM-written code does not share a kernel with the host or with other tenants. The project reports an average cold start under 60ms and less than 5MB of extra memory per instance, which lets one node hold thousands of sandboxes. Sandboxes can pause automatically when idle, resume on the next request, and be snapshotted, cloned or rolled back. A credential vault and the CubeEgress proxy keep secrets out of the sandbox and enforce domain allowlists with audit logs. Because it speaks the E2B SDK interface, teams can switch from E2B by changing one environment variable. You run it yourself on bare metal, Kubernetes with Helm, or Tencent Cloud with Terraform. The project lists no pricing or paid plans.

Use cases

  • Run LLM-generated code safely
  • Host long-running AI agent processes
  • Replace E2B with a self-hosted service
  • Fork agent states for tree search
  • Run browser automation in isolation
  • Support reinforcement learning rollouts

Who it's for

  • AI agent developers
  • Platform engineers
  • Infrastructure teams

Why use CubeSandbox

  • Each sandbox has its own kernel, which removes the shared-kernel escape risk of plain containers.
  • Very fast starts and low memory use make it practical to give every agent task a fresh sandbox.
  • Existing E2B client code can point at CubeSandbox by changing one environment variable.
  • Secrets stay in the control plane, out of the sandbox, the model context and logs.
  • Snapshots let agents roll back or branch into several exploration paths.

CubeSandbox features

  • MicroVM sandboxes with a dedicated guest kernel on RustVMM and KVM
  • Cold start under 60ms using snapshot clones
  • Under 5MB memory overhead per sandbox
  • E2B SDK drop-in compatibility
  • Snapshot, clone and rollback of sandbox state
  • Auto-pause and auto-resume for idle sandboxes
  • Credential vault and CubeEgress domain filtering with audit logs
  • Template system that builds sandboxes from OCI images
  • Web console for sandboxes, templates and nodes
  • Multi-node clusters orchestrated by CubeMaster
  • Pluggable volume storage including S3 and host mounts

CubeSandbox integrations

  • E2B SDK
  • Kubernetes
  • Helm
  • Terraform
  • Tencent Cloud
  • S3
  • OpenClaw

How to get started with CubeSandbox

  1. Install CubeSandbox with the quick start, a self-build on one machine, Helm on Kubernetes, or Terraform on Tencent Cloud.
  2. Create a template from an OCI image or pick a preset from the Template Store.
  3. Point your E2B SDK client at the CubeSandbox endpoint and request a sandbox.
  4. Run code or an agent inside the MicroVM; idle sandboxes pause and resume when called again.
  5. Snapshot, fork or roll back state, and manage nodes and sandboxes from the web console.

CubeSandbox limitations

  • You deploy and operate it yourself; no hosted service is described
  • Cross-node pause and resume is a preview feature
  • Default Terraform setup is a proof-of-concept size and supports few sandboxes
  • GPU sandboxes and full E2B API parity are still roadmap items

CubeSandbox pricing

CubeSandbox is open source, so you can use and self-host it for free.

Prices can change and may vary by country or exclude tax. Check the official pricing page.

  1. Claude Managed Agents

Anthropic's hosted agent harness for long-running, asynchronous tasks: define an agent, pick a sandbox, start a session and stream results.

  2. Cognee

Open-source memory engine for AI agents that combines vector search, knowledge graphs and relational storage, with a hosted cloud.

  3. E2B

Cloud sandboxes where AI agents run code safely, with Python and JavaScript SDKs and per-second usage billing.

  4. LangChain

  5. Modal

Serverless cloud platform for running AI inference, training, batch jobs and agent sandboxes, billed per second of compute.

  6. SPACE

Open-source sandbox platform from Perplexity that runs agent and user code in isolated Firecracker microVMs through an HTTP API.

CubeSandbox FAQ

How much does CubeSandbox cost?

The project lists no pricing. The software runs on your own infrastructure, so your cost is the hardware or cloud resources. The Tencent Cloud Terraform guide notes that billing defaults to pay-as-you-go for the resources.

Is there a free plan for CubeSandbox?

No plans are published. The project was validated in Tencent Cloud production and then open-sourced, with code on GitHub under the tencentcloud organization.

Is CubeSandbox open source?

The documentation says the core system was open-sourced after production use at Tencent Cloud, and the repository is hosted on GitHub. Check the repository for the license terms.

Is CubeSandbox compatible with E2B?

Yes. It implements the E2B SDK interface, so you can switch from E2B Cloud by changing one environment variable. The roadmap lists closing the remaining API gaps.

Where can I deploy CubeSandbox?

Guides cover single-machine bare-metal and PVM deployments, multi-node clusters, Kubernetes with Helm, and a Terraform deployer for Tencent Cloud.

What are alternatives to CubeSandbox?

E2B, Daytona, Modal Sandboxes and Firecracker-based setups offer comparable isolated execution for AI agents.
