What is Vapi?

Vapi is a developer platform for building voice AI agents. Each agent combines speech-to-text, a large language model and text-to-speech, and you can choose providers such as Deepgram, OpenAI, Anthropic, Google and ElevenLabs or bring your own model. Agents can make and receive calls on phone numbers, run in a web app through client SDKs, call your APIs and tools, and be grouped into Squads that hand conversations between specialized assistants. Common builds are customer support, lead qualification and appointment scheduling. Billing is usage based: with no success package you pay $0.05 per minute for Vapi hosting plus provider costs passed through at cost, and you start with $5 in free credits. Core, Pro and Premier success packages add organizations, concurrency, data retention and support. Pro has a $999 per month minimum, and Premier and Enterprise are custom.

How to get started with Vapi

1. Create an account and build an assistant in the dashboard, or use a client SDK or the CLI.
2. Choose a transcriber, model and voice, or start from a Model Intelligence preset.
3. Add tools and a server URL so the agent can call your systems.
4. Attach a phone number or embed the web call in your app.
5. Test with simulations, then add a success package as concurrency and support needs grow.

Vapi limitations

• The no-package tier is capped at 4 concurrent calls and 14 days of raw data retention
• Network and telephony transport fees are charged by the provider
• HIPAA handling is a paid add-on
