What is Markstream?

Markstream is a family of Markdown renderers built for AI applications, where a model sends text a few tokens at a time and the Markdown is incomplete at every step. Instead of flickering or breaking, the renderer keeps partial syntax stable, reuses DOM nodes and draws code blocks, tables, math and diagrams as they arrive. It ships one package per framework: markstream-vue (labelled stable) for Vue 3, Nuxt and VitePress, markstream-react for React and Next.js, plus Svelte 5, Angular, Octane and Vue 2 ports, and a parser-only package for any JavaScript app. Features include progressive Mermaid and D2 diagrams, KaTeX math, streaming diff code blocks through stream-diffs, virtualization for long documents and a safe HTML policy. Frontend developers use it to render SSE or WebSocket chat output or to embed rich Markdown in docs sites. The packages install from npm, the docs include a playground for each framework, and the project accepts sponsorship on GitHub Sponsors. No paid plans are listed.

Use cases

  • Render streaming AI chat output
  • Show Mermaid diagrams as they stream
  • Display code diffs while they generate
  • Render KaTeX math in LLM answers
  • Parse Markdown into structured nodes
  • Embed rich Markdown in a docs site

Who it's for

  • Frontend developers
  • Vue and Nuxt developers
  • React and Next.js developers
  • AI app builders

Why use Markstream

  • Partial Markdown from a model renders cleanly instead of breaking the layout mid-stream.
  • A package for each framework lets you stay in the stack you already use.
  • Progressive Mermaid and streaming code diffs make AI answers with diagrams and patches readable as they appear.
  • The parser-only package lets you build your own interface on the same parsing behavior.
  • Task-based guides and per-framework playgrounds shorten setup for chat apps and docs sites.

How to get started with Markstream

  1. Pick the package for your framework, such as markstream-vue or markstream-react.
  2. Install it with your package manager and add any optional peers you need, such as mermaid, katex or stream-diffs.
  3. Import the renderer component and its CSS, then append each incoming chunk of model output to the content prop.
  4. Mark the stream as final when it ends so the last nodes settle.
  5. Customize components, tags and code blocks using the guides.

Markstream limitations

  • Only the Vue package is labelled stable; the others are beta or alpha
  • The Svelte package supports Svelte 5 only
  • The Angular package needs Angular 20 or newer
  • Mermaid, KaTeX and stream-diffs are optional peer dependencies you install separately

Markstream FAQ

Is Markstream free and open source?

No paid plans or pricing are listed. It is distributed as packages installed through a package manager, its source is on GitHub, and maintenance is supported through GitHub Sponsors.

Which frameworks does Markstream support?

Vue 3, Nuxt and VitePress (stable), React, Next.js and Remix (beta), Svelte 5, Angular standalone components, Octane and Vue 2.6 or 2.7, plus a framework-agnostic parser.

Does Markstream render Mermaid and math?

Yes. It supports progressive Mermaid and D2 diagrams and KaTeX math, using optional peer packages you install when you need them.

Can it handle SSE or WebSocket output?

Yes. The docs include guides for AI chat, SSE and WebSocket Markdown, where you append each chunk to the content and mark the stream done at the end.

Does it work with Next.js server rendering?

markstream-react lists Next.js App Router and Pages Router support with SSR-safe entries, and a separate Next.js guide covers server-first rendering.
