The Embeddings API turns content into dense vectors for semantic search, clustering and classification across more than 100 languages, and a Reranker re-scores candidate results against a query for better relevance. The Reader API fetches a web page or PDF and returns clean, LLM-friendly Markdown, while a search endpoint returns the pages behind a web query as text. Other endpoints cover document OCR over an OpenAI-style chat schema and asynchronous batch embeddings for large datasets. How to get started with Jina AI

1. Create an API key in the Jina dashboard. Reader also works without one under a lower rate limit; Search requires a key.
2. Send the key as a bearer token with requests to the Reader, Search, embeddings or rerank endpoints.
3. Embed your documents, store the vectors, then embed each user query to retrieve candidates.
4. Pass the candidates and the query to the rerank endpoint to reorder them, and use Reader to pull page content into prompts.
5. Top up tokens as you go, turn on auto top-up for production, or move to a paid or premium key for higher limits.

Jina AI limitations

• Reader without an API key is limited to 20 requests per minute
• The search endpoint needs an API key
• Most open-weight models use CC-BY-NC 4.0, so commercial self-hosting needs a license
• jina-embeddings-v4 carries the Qwen Research License with no commercial use
• Entities or countries under U.S. export controls cannot be served
