Vanna

Open-source Python framework for building user-aware AI agents, such as SQL data analysts, with an optional managed cloud.

Open source

What is Vanna?

Vanna is an open-source framework for building AI agents that respect who the user is. An agent is assembled from services for the language model, tools, storage, system prompts, middleware, observability and user authentication, so permissions and quotas can be enforced per user. Templates cover data analysis agents that query databases in natural language, document question answering, customer support, workflow automation and visualization with Plotly. The core is MIT licensed and can be self-hosted, and teams can later move to Vanna's managed cloud or an enterprise deployment without rewriting code. Paid plans on the pricing page are Explorer at $50 per month for 20 questions a day, Team at $500 per month for 300 questions a day, and custom Enterprise with unlimited questions, on-premise support and SAML SSO. Annual billing carries a 20% discount.

Use cases

  • Ask a database questions in plain language
  • Build an agent with per-user permissions
  • Create document Q&A agents
  • Generate charts and dashboards from data
  • Automate multi-step workflows
  • Add a support agent that tracks quotas

Who it's for

  • Developers
  • Data teams
  • AI engineers
  • Enterprises

Why use Vanna

  • The same framework runs open source or on Vanna's cloud, so you can start free and upgrade without rewrites.
  • Per-user permissions and quotas are part of the design instead of an afterthought.
  • You can swap model, storage and vector providers through abstract base classes.
  • Managed options remove the work of auth, backups and monitoring.

How to get started with Vanna

  1. Install the open-source Python package and pick an LLM service such as OpenAI or Anthropic.
  2. Register tools and storage, and define how users are identified.
  3. Start from a use-case template such as a data analysis agent.
  4. Test with your own data and permissions.
  5. Move to the managed cloud or enterprise deployment if you want hosting, support and higher limits.

Vanna limitations

  • Explorer allows 20 questions a day and Team 300; exceeding limits is rate-limited until the 24-hour reset
  • Self-hosting means building storage, auth and monitoring yourself
  • Some use-case templates are marked as premium only
