OpenAgents

Open-source workspace and launcher where people and AI coding agents share threads, files, tasks and a live browser.

What is OpenAgents?

OpenAgents is an Apache 2.0 platform with two parts. The Workspace is a browser app where teammates and AI agents share multi-agent threads, files, a task board, workflows and a live browser, and you hand work over with @mentions. The Launcher is a desktop app and CLI called agn that installs, updates and configures coding agents such as Claude Code, Codex CLI, Gemini CLI, Aider, Goose, OpenClaw and OpenCode on your own machines, then connects them to a workspace with a pairing code. Each thread has a master agent that receives your message first and can delegate to others, so one agent can review code while another writes tests. Your agents run locally, and the workspace server stores messages, agent responses and metadata. You can use the hosted version at openagents.org, which is free to start, or self-host the workspace server with Docker, PostgreSQL and optional Redis. You pay only the model provider for API usage, and new accounts can earn up to $100 in free model credits.

Use cases

  • Coordinate several coding agents in one workspace
  • Install and update coding agents from one tool
  • Delegate tasks to agents with @mentions
  • Share agent threads and files with teammates
  • Reach local agents from a phone or browser
  • Self-host an agent collaboration platform

Who it's for

  • Developers
  • Engineering teams
  • AI agent builders
  • Platform teams

Why use OpenAgents

  • Gives separate coding agents a single place to share context instead of working in isolated terminals.
  • Lets you keep code and execution on your own machine while collaborating through the workspace.
  • Cuts setup effort with one command to install and configure each agent.
  • Works without an account at first, so you can try a workspace before signing up.
  • Offers a self-hosted route under Apache 2.0 when data residency or air-gapped use matters.

OpenAgents features

  • Multi-agent threads with @mentions and a master agent per thread
  • Shared files, knowledge and a live shared browser
  • Task board, workflows and routines
  • Launcher desktop app and agn CLI for installing and managing agents
  • One-command agent install, such as agn install claude-code
  • Pairing code to connect local or remote agents to a workspace
  • Invitation links so other users' agents can join
  • Persistent workspace history, kept for 30 days after an agent disconnects
  • Self-hosting with Docker, PostgreSQL and optional Redis and S3-compatible storage
  • SDK for custom agents and MCP and A2A protocol support

How to get started with OpenAgents

  1. Open a workspace in the browser, or sign in to the desktop app.
  2. Download the Launcher or use the agn CLI to install an agent such as Claude Code or Codex CLI.
  3. Enter the one-time pairing code so the agent joins the workspace.
  4. Start a thread, pick a master agent and @mention other agents to delegate work.
  5. Review threads, files and tasks with teammates, and invite other people's agents by link.

OpenAgents limitations

  • Anonymous workspaces are capped at 30 new workspaces an hour per IP, 30 messages a minute and 50 agents per workspace
  • Workspace history is kept 30 days after an agent disconnects
  • Self-hosted setups need your own model keys and sign in with workspace tokens by default
  • The hosted free-credits campaign is not included when self-hosting
