Octochains

Lightweight Python framework that runs specialist AI agents in parallel isolation, then merges their reports into one verdict.

What is Octochains?

Octochains is a small Python framework for multi-agent reasoning where every specialist works alone. Instead of letting agents read each other's chat history, it launches each one in its own thread with no view of its peers, so early answers cannot bias later ones. When all reports are in, an aggregator such as Synthesizer, WeightedSynthesizer or ConflictChecker merges them, flags contradictions and produces a single verdict. Every run keeps a trace of each agent's rationale and any errors, and one failed thread does not crash the rest. You bring your own LLM through a plain function, and agents can carry Skills, which are markdown knowledge packs. The package ships 13 preset specialists covering due diligence, compliance and security review. It installs with pip and is free under the Business Source License 1.1, which converts to Apache 2.0 on May 10, 2030.

Use cases

  • Run parallel expert reviews of a case file
  • Audit expert reports for contradictions
  • Screen startup deals with an AI due-diligence council
  • Check documents for GDPR and EU AI Act exposure
  • Triage security logs from separate angles
  • Build custom specialist agents with Skills
  • Keep a trace of every agent's reasoning

Who it's for

  • Python developers
  • AI engineers
  • Compliance teams
  • Researchers

Why use Octochains

  • Isolation stops agents from copying each other's early conclusions, which gives independent views to compare.
  • A failed expert thread is trapped, so the other reports and the final aggregation still run.
  • Only one required dependency, Pydantic, keeps installs light compared with larger agent frameworks.
  • Bring any model by supplying a function, so you keep control of API keys and providers.
  • Run traces record each agent's role, status and errors for review and audits.

Octochains features

  • Parallel isolated threads with no peer awareness
  • Thread-level failure trapping and recovery
  • Synthesizer aggregator for one merged narrative
  • WeightedSynthesizer with per-role weights
  • ConflictChecker with prompt-matrix and pairwise audits
  • 13 preset agents for finance, compliance and security
  • Markdown Skills loaded without extra dependencies
  • Model-agnostic: pass any LLM as a Python function
  • Run logs with agent traces and error states
  • Cookbook examples for aggregators

Octochains integrations

  • OpenAI
  • Pydantic
  • PyPI

How to get started with Octochains

  1. Install the package with pip install octochains.
  2. Write a function that sends a prompt to your chosen LLM and returns text.
  3. Pick preset agents such as cfo_agent or data_sovereignty_auditor, or subclass Agent for your own.
  4. Create an Engine with the agents and an aggregator, then call run with your problem data.
  5. Read the consensus narrative and the audit trail of traces from the returned report.

Octochains limitations

  • The project is in beta and minor releases may include breaking changes
  • The Business Source License bars offering it as a managed SaaS without an enterprise license
  • Parallel isolation suits decomposable analysis and is not meant for sequential automation

Octochains pricing

Octochains is free to use.

Prices can change and may vary by country or exclude tax. Check the official pricing page.

  1. Agno

Python framework and AgentOS runtime for building agents, teams and workflows, then serving them as an API with a control plane.

  2. AutoGen

Microsoft's MIT-licensed Python and .NET framework for multi-agent AI apps, now archived; new projects are pointed to Microsoft Agent Framework.

  3. CrewAI

Multi-agent framework and platform for building AI agent crews in Python or a visual editor, then deploying and monitoring them.

  4. LangGraph

Low-level open-source orchestration framework and runtime for building stateful, long-running AI agents as graphs.

  5. OpenAI Agents SDK

Open-source Python framework for building multi-agent workflows with tools, handoffs, guardrails, tracing, sandboxes and voice agents.

  6. Pydantic AI

A type-safe, model-agnostic Python framework for building agents and LLM applications, from the team behind Pydantic.

Octochains FAQ

How much does Octochains cost?

It is free to install from PyPI. Individuals and internal company use are allowed under the Business Source License 1.1; commercial managed offerings need an enterprise license from the author.

Is there a free plan for Octochains?

There are no plans or tiers. The framework is free for personal, academic and internal use. You still pay your own LLM provider for model calls.

Is Octochains open source?

It is source-available under the Business Source License 1.1, which the author calls Fair-Code. The license converts to Apache 2.0 on May 10, 2030.

Which LLMs does Octochains work with?

Any model. You pass a Python function that takes a prompt and returns text, and the README shows an OpenAI example. The framework does not require provider SDKs.

How is Octochains different from CrewAI or LangGraph?

Agents run in parallel with no shared chat history, and a separate aggregator reconciles them. The README positions it for high-stakes consensus and auditing rather than conversational automation.

Does Octochains have preset agents?

Yes. There are 13 presets across a startup due-diligence council, regulatory and compliance auditors, and security analysts, and each accepts extra Skills.

What are alternatives to Octochains?

Alternatives for multi-agent orchestration include CrewAI, AutoGen, LangGraph, OpenAI Agents SDK and Pydantic AI.
