II-Commons Skills

A command-line tool and agent skill for fast retrieval of arXiv, PubMed, PMC and US policy documents from daily-updated corpora.

What is II-Commons Skills?

II-Commons Skills lets an AI agent or a person search several research and policy corpora through one command-line interface. It covers arXiv, PubMed and PMC, and supported US policy collections, with indexes refreshed daily. Retrieval is deterministic and lexical, using a PostgreSQL BM25 extension, rather than semantic guessing. The CLI is published on npm, needs Node.js 18 or newer, and writes JSON to standard output with machine-readable errors, which makes it easy for agents to parse. A cutoff command reports the latest date each corpus covers so answers about recent material can state how fresh they are. You can install it as an agent skill so your coding or research agent calls it automatically. Basic use needs no authentication, and higher usage limits are available by requesting an API token from the website. Apache-2.0 licensed.

Use cases

  • Search arXiv papers from an agent
  • Look up PubMed and PMC articles
  • Retrieve US policy documents
  • Check how fresh a corpus is
  • Feed literature search into research workflows

Who it's for

  • Researchers
  • AI agent developers
  • Biomedical researchers
  • Policy analysts

Why use II-Commons Skills

  • Deterministic results make an agent's research steps repeatable and easier to check.
  • The cutoff command lets answers state how recent the data is.
  • JSON output means agents can use results without scraping web pages.
  • One tool covers papers, biomedical literature and policy, so fewer separate integrations are needed.

II-Commons Skills features

  • Search across arXiv, PubMed, PMC and US policy corpora
  • Daily-updated indexes
  • Fast lexical retrieval with a PostgreSQL BM25 extension
  • JSON output and machine-readable errors
  • Cutoff command showing corpus coverage date
  • Installable as an agent skill
  • Optional API token for higher limits

How to get started with II-Commons Skills

  1. Make sure Node.js 18 or newer is installed.
  2. Run the CLI with npx, or install the npm package globally.
  3. Search a corpus by giving the corpus name, a quoted topic and any filters, or check the cutoff command for freshness.
  4. To let an agent use it, install the skill folder in your agent's skill path; request an API token on commons.ii.inc if you need higher limits.

II-Commons Skills limitations

  • Lexical keyword matching, not semantic search
  • Requires Node.js 18 or newer
  • Basic usage is rate limited unless you request a token
