CopilotKit

Open-source frontend toolkit for putting agents, chat and generative UI inside apps, plus a hosted Intelligence layer for threads and memory.

What is CopilotKit?

CopilotKit is an MIT-licensed toolkit for the user-facing side of agent products. Developers use it to add chat, agent-driven interfaces and generative UI to React, Angular and mobile apps, with shared state between the app and the agent and human-in-the-loop steps for approval. The same team created the AG-UI protocol, which standardizes how agents talk to interfaces. On top of the open-source SDK sits CopilotKit Intelligence, a platform that stores conversation threads and adds AG-UI Streams so users can reconnect and resume across devices, User Memory, Automatic Learning that turns real usage into reviewable skills, Product Analytics, and Channels for running the same agent in Slack or Microsoft Teams. You can run Intelligence as a cloud-hosted service with a project API key, or self-host it on Kubernetes or AWS. Every organization starts on the free Developer plan, and Pro, Team and Enterprise plans are listed without prices in the documentation.

Use cases

  • Add an in-app copilot to a React app
  • Render generative UI from agent output
  • Let users resume agent conversations across devices
  • Store user memories after a chat ends
  • Run one agent in Slack or Microsoft Teams
  • Track how people use an agent in a product

Who it's for

  • Frontend developers
  • Product engineers
  • SaaS teams
  • Agent builders

Why use CopilotKit

  • The open-source SDK has no license fee, so you can build the in-app agent interface without buying a hosted product first.
  • Your frontend, agent and model stay where they are; Intelligence adds storage and learning around them.
  • Setup tabs cover TypeScript, Python, Go, Ruby and C#/.NET, so backends in several languages can connect.
  • You can start on cloud-hosted Intelligence and move to self-hosted later, because both use the same app APIs.
  • Existing LangGraph threads and Google ADK sessions can be imported once to bring earlier history over.

CopilotKit features

  • Chat and generative UI components for React, Angular and mobile
  • Shared state between the app and the agent
  • Human-in-the-loop controls for approving agent actions
  • AG-UI protocol for agent-to-interface communication
  • AG-UI Streams so users can reconnect and resume threads
  • User Memory that keeps facts about a person after a conversation
  • Automatic Learning that turns usage into skills you can review and publish
  • Product Analytics for agent usage
  • Channels for Slack and Microsoft Teams
  • Local Inspector to watch threads, learning and tool calls

CopilotKit integrations

  • LangGraph
  • Google ADK
  • Slack
  • Microsoft Teams
  • Kubernetes
  • AWS

How to get started with CopilotKit

  1. Add the CopilotKit SDK to your app, or run the CLI to create a new one.
  2. Sign in at intelligence.copilotkit.ai, create an organization and choose the Developer plan or a paid plan.
  3. Create a project and let the quickstart write the project API key to your .env file.
  4. Connect your runtime so conversations are saved as threads with an event timeline.
  5. Turn on memory, learning, analytics or Slack and Teams channels as you need them.

CopilotKit limitations

  • You still need your own agent, model and frontend; CopilotKit supplies the layer around them
  • Usage limits apply on the free Developer plan
  • Product Analytics is a limited trial on Developer, and the full version is part of Enterprise
  • Self-hosting Intelligence needs a license key and your own Postgres, Redis and OIDC provider
  • Runtimes other than TypeScript require Intelligence

CopilotKit FAQ

Is CopilotKit free?

The SDK is MIT licensed. On the hosted Intelligence platform, each organization begins on the free Developer plan, which comes with usage limits and covers one seat, along with User Memory, Automatic Learning and AG-UI Streams.

How much does CopilotKit cost?

The documentation lists Developer as free but gives no dollar prices for Pro, Team or Enterprise; it points to the pricing page for current details. You may also pay for model APIs and hosting.

What plans does CopilotKit have?

Developer, Pro, Team and Enterprise. Pro suits a growing app, Team fits when your whole group needs access, and Enterprise is for agents running at scale or inside your own infrastructure.

Can I self-host CopilotKit Intelligence?

Yes. You can run it on your own Kubernetes cluster using a Helm chart, or on AWS using an ECS bundle. Self-hosting needs a license key and comes with the self-hosted Team plan or a custom Enterprise plan.

Does CopilotKit work with LangGraph?

Yes. You can connect an existing LangGraph app and import threads from LangGraph Server, LangGraph Platform or LangSmith Deployments. Google ADK sessions can be imported too.

What are alternatives to CopilotKit?

Related tools include the Vercel AI SDK, assistant-ui, LangGraph and Mastra. The right fit depends on your language, hosting needs and how much control you want over the agent loop.
