What is Animatica?

Animatica is a set of animation plugins that generate and edit character motion inside 3D software. Animatica Choreographer is a free, open source plugin for Blender, Motion Builder and 3ds Max: you describe an action, key the poses that must happen or place waypoints, and it returns a take as editable keyframes on your own rig, at 30 fps and up to 10 seconds per prompt. Animatica Marionette is a one-time $59 Blender add-on for posing and editing by hand, with autopose, motion trails, a smoothing brush, onion skin and a check for sliding feet and popping joints. Generation runs on Animatica Cloud, where every account gets 10 free generations a month, or on a server you run yourself using the open Apache-2.0 backbone. Paid cloud options include a $5 pack of 50 generations, Pro at $20 per month, Teams at $40 per seat per month and custom Enterprise terms. The vendor says motion inputs are not used to train its models.

Use cases

  • Generate character motion from text prompts
  • Pose characters by hand in Blender
  • Fill in animation between key poses
  • Create seamless animation loops for games
  • Retarget motion to custom characters
  • Fix sliding feet in existing animation

Who it's for

  • 3D animators
  • Game developers
  • Animation studios
  • Technical artists

Why use Animatica

  • Generated motion arrives as normal keyframes on your own rig, so you can select, retime and delete it like any animation.
  • Choreographer is free, and the cloud has a monthly free allowance, so you can try the workflow without paying.
  • Marionette works offline with no account and never uses a generation.
  • You can run the open backbone on your own GPU if you prefer not to use the cloud.
  • The vendor states you may use generated motion in commercial work on any plan.

Animatica features

  • Text-to-motion that outputs editable keyframes at 30 fps
  • Key poses, waypoints and hand or foot pins as constraints
  • Variations, loops and in-place cycles
  • Several characters generated in one take
  • Autopose, motion trail, smoothing brush and onion skin in Marionette
  • Motion Check for sliding feet and popping joints
  • Works with Rigify, Auto-Rig Pro, CloudRig and Mixamo rigs in Marionette
  • Open Apache-2.0 backbone for self-hosting
  • Cloud API access over MMCP with an account key

Animatica integrations

  • Blender
  • Autodesk Motion Builder
  • Autodesk 3ds Max
  • Rigify
  • Auto-Rig Pro
  • CloudRig
  • Mixamo

How to get started with Animatica

  1. Install the Choreographer plugin for Blender, Motion Builder or 3ds Max and sign in to Animatica Cloud, or point it at your own server.
  2. Key two or three poses on your character, or describe the action in a prompt.
  3. The model generates the motion between your keys at 30 fps, up to 10 seconds per prompt.
  4. The take comes back as keyframes on your rig that you can edit like any animation.
  5. Use Marionette to pose and refine the result by hand, and buy more generations if needed.

Animatica limitations

  • Marionette runs in Blender only at the moment
  • Self-hosting does not include retargeting, control rigs, text-to-pose, variations or loops
  • Free cloud accounts get 10 generations per month, and monthly allowances do not carry over
  • The service is in early access, and generated motion is provided as is
